Executive Vice President, Research & Innovation

About the Position

Zymeworks is seeking an Executive Vice President, Research & Innovation who is well respected in the industry with prior biopharmaceutical senior leadership experience and possess a strong foundation in discovery research and early drug development activities with a successful track record as a drug developer. In addition, should possess a strong scientific and business acumen to provide additional strength of leadership to Zymeworks through a critical growth transition and earned reputation as an innovative pharmaceutical organization. The new EVP of Research and Innovation will also be responsible for providing critical leadership and mentorship to an existing strong scientific group, serve as a passionate inspirer to others, demonstrate patience and humility and be an exceptional leader who “hears” their team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Draws on in-depth experience in small and large molecule therapeutics and novel protein modalities to develop and implement the company's strategic research road map, including next generation and/or blue-sky research activities in support of the company's research portfolio strategy.
  • In collaboration with the senior management team, develops strategic and operating plans that support the company's discovery R&D objectives led by cutting-edge science.
  • Provides overall strategic direction and program leadership for discovery and early development activities through scale up and manufacturing, while ensuring alignment between corporate strategy/objectives and the program's strategic plan.
  • Oversees strategy and execution of research, preclinical and non-clinical development designed to enable creative, timely and compliant regulatory submissions of novel therapeutics for the treatment of cancer, autoimmune and inflammatory diseases.
  • Provides leadership to the Therapeutics Research, Discovery Research, Protein Engineering, and Technology Integration and Bioinformatics departments, nurturing a culture of engagement, respect and high-performance within a team environment. Provides leadership, coaching and feedback; mentors and empowers personnel.
  • Oversees the activities of in-house cross-functional project teams, external CROs and academic collaborators to accelerate the development of innovative new products.
  • Partners with the functional area representatives within the R&D organization to develop milestone-based plans for advancing molecules from preclinical development through early clinical development.
  • Designs and executes IND-enabling studies during preclinical development. Develops and defines target product profiles for new and existing compounds.
  • Establishes timelines and budgets for program activities and ensures targets are met accordingly.
  • Establishes "go/no go" criteria for new and existing molecules as they move through discovery into nonclinical and early clinical development.
  • Enhances the scientific credibility of the company through contributions to the scientific literature (publications/presentations).
  • Utilizes external network to execute pipeline strategy and for the identification of new portfolio opportunities.
  • Supports due diligence of new in-licensing opportunities, research programs and technologies.
  • Serves as lead or sponsor for alliances and external collaborations, develops relationships with key opinion leaders and study investigators. Ensures input from key stakeholders within the company and obtains external expert advice as needed.
  • Collaborates with the Board of Directors, Scientific Advisory Committee, key external opinion leaders and decision makers to ensure that the organization's vision and performance meets the needs of a global patient population.
  • Presents program activities during conferences, Scientific Advisory Boards, Key Opinion Leader meetings, etc.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Ph.D. with 15+ years’ related experience in discovery research through IND-enabling preclinical development and early-stage clinical studies.
  • Experience spanning small and large molecule therapeutics, novel protein modalities and their therapeutic applications in virology, immunology and oncology, interconnected through a common interest in approaches aimed at modulating the immune response.
  • Strong track record of drug discovery success, meeting and exceeding goals.
  • In-depth understanding of the drug discovery and preclinical development process, including regulatory requirements for registration of new drugs and new indications.
  • Proven ability to design and implement studies with direct translation to drug development and regulatory filings.
  • Ability to support the evaluation and due diligence of research programs and technologies.
  • Exceptional leadership skills and demonstrated ability to foster a culture of accountability, results and innovation in an open and highly collaborative environment to optimize outcomes in a matrixed environment.
  • Excellent analytical and conceptual thinking abilities, forward-looking.
  • Demonstrated ability to think holistically and long-term across a broad spectrum of industry trends and issues.
  • Driven to excel and capable of inspiring others to excellence as well.
  • Demonstrated ability to drive steep change as well as incremental, continuous improvements in quality, efficiency and growth through change initiatives and vigorous leadership.
