Chair, Department of Cancer Biology

The Lerner Research Institute, home to laboratory, translational and clinical research at Cleveland Clinic, in collaboration with the nationally ranked Taussig Cancer Institute, invites applications for the position of Chair, Department of Cancer Biology.

With 170 independent fundamental laboratories, over 1500 employees, and research expenditures of $250 million per year, the Lerner Research Institute (https://www.lerner.ccf.org) is at the forefront of discovery science, fosters translational research and accelerates innovation for patient care.  The LRI is undergoing an exciting period of strategic expansion with major new initiatives including the Center for Therapeutics Discovery, the Center for Microbiome and Human Health, and a new enterprise-wide biorepository.

The Department of Cancer Biology was established in 1991 for research into the causes, diagnosis, prevention, and cure of cancer with the objective of rapid translation into strategies that will improve patient outcomes. The Department is home to 19 independent laboratories with over 100 members investigating cell signaling, DNA damage and repair, tumor suppressor genes, histone modification, cell cycle control, cell invasion, angiogenesis, imaging, and the innate defense against viruses and cancer. Annual research funding in 2017 totaled more than $14 million in federal and society/foundation awards. Department members are integral to all programs of the NCI-designated Case Comprehensive Cancer Center (https://case.edu/cancer).

Department members also have close collaborations with clinicians and researchers in the Taussig Cancer Institute (https://my.clevelandclinic.org/departments/cancer), including the Translational Hematology and Oncology Research program (https://my.clevelandclinic.org/departments/cancer/depts/thor#overview-tab). The Taussig Cancer Institute (TCI), ranked #5 in the US in the 2018 US News and World Report survey, is one of largest cancer centers in the United States, serving 8500 new patients yearly with 21 multidisciplinary programs and more than 300 open interventional clinical trials. Together the LRI and TCI comprise a strongly collaborative research environment with substantial core facilities and translational research potential.

The ideal candidate for this leadership position will be a recognized scientist with a distinguished career of accomplishments and leadership in biomedical research. Candidates must have a PhD, MD/PhD or MD degree, a strong publication record, and current external research support and will be eligible for the rank of Professor at Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine.  The position offers generous start-up funds and competitive resources to expand new areas of research in cancer science.
