Professor and Chair - Radiation Oncology

The University of Washington School of Medicine seeks a full-time Professor with tenure, and Chair of the Department of Radiation Oncology. This is a 12-month service period position (July - June) per year, with an anticipated start date in Spring 2020. The successful candidate will be expected to provide programmatic excellence in clinical services, education, and independent, original research.

The University of Washington Department of Radiation Oncology is one of the leading academic radiation oncology departments in the United States with outstanding clinical, education and research programs. The department uses a multidisciplinary approach to patient care and is an integral part of the Cancer Program at the University of Washington. The institution has been consistently ranked by U.S. News & World Report as amongst the top 5 cancer programs in the United States.

The Department consists of 24 M.D. Faculty, 23 PhD Faculty in Medical Physics and Basic Science,5 ARNP’s and PA’s, 10 Radiation Oncology Residents, 4 Medical Physics Residents, 8 Clinical Research Coordinators, and one fellow in SBRT and one fellow in Proton Radiation Therapy with additional postdoctoral fellows and graduate students participating in various research projects in medical physics, radiation chemistry and radiation biology and molecular medicine. The Department’s clinical programs include the entire gamut of services, including image-guided IMRT/VMAT, proton beam radiotherapy, intraoperative radiotherapy, HDR brachytherapy (implant) procedures, SBRT, single and multi-session Gamma Knife and pediatric radiation oncology. The department also runs an active fast neutron radiotherapy service.

The department serves as the primary teaching program for a five-state region that includes Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho. There is a broad research portfolio with federally-funded projects and trials in radiation biology and molecular medicine, medical physics, and radiation chemistry.

The department is an integral part of the Cancer Program at the University of Washington and a major contributor to the contribution margin of each of the seven centers at which we provide professional services. Care is provided at the University of Washington Medical Center, the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA, a three-way collaboration among University of Washington Medicine, the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and Seattle Children’s Hospital), Harborview Medical Center, Northwest Hospital, the Seattle VA Medical Center, SCCA Proton Therapy Center, Seattle Children’s Hospital, and Peninsula Cancer Center. In addition, several of our faculty hold appointments at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.

Qualifications

Successful candidates must possess an MD or foreign equivalent and national leadership experience.  Candidates should have proven collaborative leadership skills to direct the clinical, research, and educational programs of the department, and demonstrate a strong clinical practice background, excellence in scholarship, and administrative experience. A successful candidate must have demonstrated excellence in working with faculty, administration, residents, and students from a wide range of disciplines, cultures, and academic backgrounds throughout the community. Candidates must be board certified by the American Board of Radiation Oncology and eligible for a medical license in Washington State.

In order to be eligible for University sponsorship for an H-1B visa, graduates of foreign (non-U.S.) medical schools must show successful completion of all three steps of the U.S. Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE), or equivalent as determined by the Secretary of Health and Human Services.
