The Division of Hematology/Oncology provides medical care to the people of North Carolina; serves as a referral center for patients from throughout the United States and worldwide; educates medical school undergraduates, residents and fellows in the subspecialties of Hematology and Oncology; and advances scholarly research and laboratory and clinical investigations in the health sciences. The activities of the Division are diverse and complex, with an annual budget of over $7 million and a staff of approximately fifty. The patient care activities are broad in scope. Long-term care requires interaction of all members of the health care team. Care is provided in seven outpatient clinics (breast, lung, leukemia/lymphoma, bone marrow transplant, prostate, sickle cell and thrombosis/hemostasis clinics), in the hospital bone marrow transplant unit and two in-patient services. The Division provides a significant patient referral base to the Departments of Surgery, Pharmacy and Radiology. The revenue stream generated by new patients brought into the UNC Health Care system by this Division is an important source of support for these organizations. Research activities, include long-term clinical treatment trials as well as basic research, and encompass several geographically separate laboratories. Research is funded by federal agencies and by pharmaceutical and research companies covering a wide range of areas related to cancer treatment and epidemiology. The Division’s purpose is to integrate activity in patient care, basic and clinical research, and educational programs among participating elements to address evolving issues in science and medicine.
