Director, Chemistry


This newly created position will involve oversight of the synthetic chemistry efforts within research at Seattle Genetics. The focus of the group surrounds the design and development of highly potent anticancer drugs for targeted delivery, novel linker technologies that allow drugs to be attached to carrier molecules in conditionally labile manners, and multiple technologies that will advance the field of antibody drug conjugates (ADCs) for cancer therapy. Additional efforts are underway to exploit conditions within tumors and other pathologies for conditional drug release in manners that provide maximal potency, therapeutic efficacy, and specificity.


Lead a group of highly skilled and experienced chemists whose research efforts surround targeted anticancer drug delivery

Extend the research scope in areas of novel chemotypes that complement existing lead agents in clinical testing

Lead synthetic efforts towards optimizing new drugs for targeted delivery

Explore linkers and drug carriers designed to enhance ADC biologic and pharmacologic properties

Initiate efforts directed towards improving the therapeutic windows of targeted drug delivery strategies beyond those achieved with known delivery systems

Position research programs within Chemistry for development, and establish strong alliances with Process Sciences, Process Chemistry and other groups within Seattle Genetics to assure that promising new molecules advance towards clinical trials

Establish strategic relationships with key academic and industrial groups that have complementary technologies to ongoing efforts within Chemistry

Extend the expertise within Chemistry using drug classes that are ideally suited for applications in immune oncology, auto-immunity, inflammation, and infectious diseases

Contribute to appropriate Intellectual Property strategies for the protection of new discoveries

Write up publications for leading journals, and present findings at key meetings

Foster a culture of innovation, discovery, and cutting-edge research


A PhD in chemistry with significant background in organic synthesis, analytical technologies, and bio-organic chemistry

Approximately 10 years of experience in areas related to the development of anticancer drugs

Expertise in drug delivery for cancer, including a broad understanding of the field and challenges it faces

Experience leading medium to large research groups doing cutting-edge research, and nurturing the careers of talented scientists at all levels

A distinguished publication and patent record, reflecting a series of outstanding discoveries

Proven leadership skills and the ability to work effectively with groups throughout the company

A track record of successfully building research groups and hiring talented scientists

Demonstrated commitment towards developing novel therapeutics for the treatment of life-threatening diseases
