The Department of Medicine at Los Angeles County Harbor-UCLA Medical Center (HUMC) seeks an outstanding physician-scientist for the position of Chief, Division of Medical Oncology and Hematology, with the opportunity to pursue an exciting academic career with a cutting-edge research program in a collaborative and interdisciplinary environment. Such a recruitment is part of an initiative to position Harbor-UCLA at the forefront of Oncology, offering the possibility to build an encompassing research program with an impact on the community.
HUMC is a 425-bed tertiary care, academic, safety net hospital within the integrated LA County Department of Health Services (DHS) and is located in the beautiful South Bay of Los Angeles. HUMC is Commission on Cancer accredited and served by the American Cancer Society Patient Navigator program. HUMC has a long tradition of extending comprehensive clinical care to the underserved, providing exceptional graduate medical education as well as discovery and innovation. HUMC enjoys a longstanding partnership with the Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute at HUMC (LABioMed) with which it shares its campus, in addition to a strong affiliation with the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA.
The Division of Medical Oncology and Hematology is composed of four full-time faculty (inclusive of the Division Chief), one nurse practitioner, multiple volunteers, emeritus and per-diem faculty, and two program coordinators. The Division faculty supervises over 10,000 outpatient visits annually, including managing a newly remodeled 17-chair infusion center. The Division also supervises the inpatient hematology and medical oncology consultation services at HUMC including eight chemotherapy ward beds. The Division’s Fellowship program in Hematology and Medical Oncology is ACGME-accredited and is one of the largest medicine subspecialty programs at HUMC, comprised of 13 fellows. The program is affiliated with City of Hope National Medical Center and Kaiser Permanente Baldwin Park and Downey.
Research infrastructure and support is provided through LABioMed, a non-profit scientific research organization dedicated to improving health and saving lives. LABioMed has a long track record of achievement in translational science. The Institute also nurtures internal research activities (e.g., seed funding program, IRBs, IACUCs, grant-writing support) and its translation into commercial ventures through an active Business Development office. LABioMed is also a partner in UCLA’s Clinical and Translational Science Institute.
Candidates must have an outstanding record of accomplishment as a leader, manager, teacher, innovator, and scholar. Additional requirements include a commitment to our vulnerable patient population, as well as a proven ability to successfully collaborate across disciplines, and work effectively within a large and complex value-based health delivery system. Experience working in a public hospital or equivalent would be desirable. The Division Chief will be expected to provide vision, leadership, and strategic direction to achieve the Department’s clinical, operational, research and scholarly missions. The Chief’s responsibilities will include all aspects of managing one of the largest divisions within the Department of Medicine. The Chief along with a clinical effort will be expected to identify, recruit, and mentor junior faculty, facilitate and integrate research and teaching activities along with developing greater synergy with oncology services across Harbor-UCLA and other DHS sites. The candidate must be: 1) ABIM Certified in Medical Oncology, Hematology, or both: 2) eligible for California medical licensure and: 3) eligible for faculty appointment at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA in an appropriate academic series.
