Duke Cancer Institute
Chief Medical Officer

Duke Cancer Institute (DCI) seeks an outstanding clinical leader to serve as its first Chief Medical Officer (CMO). This is a unique opportunity for an innovative and proactive physician executive to take a vital role in advancing world-class care across a growing health system seeking to transform the prevention and care of cancer.

Established in 1973 as one of the original eight comprehensive cancer centers designated by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), today DCI patients come for care from every county in North Carolina, every state in the nation and from around the world. Treating over 70,000 patients per year, DCI has more than 350 researchers and physicians from 27 departments and seven schools at Duke University. Home to 11 disease based tumor groups and an experimental therapeutics (Phase I) program, DCI has expanded along with Duke Health System into multiple locations across Durham and Wake Counties. Its Duke Cancer Network has affiliates across six states.

DCI is part of Duke Health which integrates the Duke University School of Medicine, Duke-NUS Medical School, Duke University School of Nursing, Duke University Health System, Private Diagnostic Clinic (Duke physicians practice), and incorporates the health and health research programs within the Duke Global Health Institute as well as those in schools and centers across Duke University, including the Duke Robert J. Margolis Center for Health Policy.

As a newly formed position, the CMO will provide clinical leadership for the oncology ambulatory clinics and the oncology inpatient units across all DCI geographic locations, in collaboration with oncology nursing and administrative leadership. The CMO will provide clinical leadership oversight for DCI quality initiatives in alignment with DUHS policies, including development of quality metrics and standards for DCI physicians. The CMO will also oversee an integrated approach to the delivery of cancer services that reflects the practice of “one Duke/one DCI” that brings Duke/DCI quality to all of their service locations.

The successful candidate will be an experienced physician leader in a cancer-related field, with successful experience in guiding multi-disciplinary clinical program activities in academic medicine, or an equally complex setting. He/she should have experience in clinical oncology services leadership with outcomes/quality measurement and clinical research experience being highly desirable. This leader will be an excellent communicator with a demonstrated track record of fostering collaboration and building consensus to achieve collective objectives with both physician and administrative leaders.

Nominations, confidential expressions of interest, and CVs should be submitted via email to the DCI search consultants, Linda Komnick and Jeff Schroetlin with Witt/Kieffer, through the office of Vinny Gossain at vgossain@wittkieffer.com, 630-575-6957.
