The Dan L Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center (DLDCCC), an NCI designated comprehensive cancer center, is recruiting a senior medical oncologist (associate professor or professor) specializing in breast cancer to serve as Medical Director of Breast Medical Oncology, and join the multidisciplinary clinical leadership team at its Lester and Sue Smith Breast Center (LSSBC).

The LSSBC, an integral part of the DLDCCC, is a comprehensive multidisciplinary clinical care and research center for patients with wide range of breast health concerns including risk assessment, family history, genetic counseling, screening, benign breast conditions, prevention, and treatment of all stages of breast cancer. With a dedicated team of breast medical oncologists, breast surgeons, breast imagers, genetic counselors, nurse practitioners, a dietitian, a social worker, we offer cutting-edge diagnosis and treatment services. LSSBC clinical research infrastructure is robust and conducts clinical trials of all phases and complexities. Our Breast Cancer Program has over $16 million in funding annually from the NCI, DOD, and other agencies. Our Breast Cancer SPORE is the first and longest funded SPORE grant in the country. Baylor is also one of the three co-sponsors of the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium, the largest breast cancer meeting in the world. Members of our Breast Cancer Program help plan and lead the symposium.

The DLDCCC recently moved to its new 65,000 sq. ft state-of-the-art clinical facility featuring a 24 chair infusion center, breast imaging facility, 54 exam rooms, and adjacent admin space for physicians, clinical staff, and clinical research staff.  

The ideal candidate would have the following key responsibilities:

  • Lead, enhance, and expand multidisciplinary breast cancer care and the clinical footprint of the LSSBC in collaboration with leaders from other specialties.
  • Provide breast cancer care to patients at the LSSBC at Baylor and Harris Health’s Smith Clinic.
  • Play a leadership role in clinical research by helping expand our clinical trial portfolio.
  • Collaborate with laboratory scientists at the LSSBC to translate their discoveries into the clinic.
  • Participate in the education of trainees, and mentoring junior faculty, in collaboration with colleagues at the Section of Hematology and Oncology.

Leaders of clinical programs at the DLDCCC report operationally to the Executive Medical Director who reports to the DLDCCC director (Dr. Kent Osborne). The successful candidate would also get an academic appointment commensurate with stage of career (subject to approval by the Tenure and Promotion Committee) at the Department of Medicine’s section of Hematology and Oncology as well as membership of the Lester and Sue Smith Breast Center.

The Department of Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine and the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Medical Center in Houston, Texas in collaboration with the Dan L. Duncan Cancer Center seek a Board Certified/Board Eligible Medical Oncologist/ Physician-investigator interested in clinical, translational, or basic research together with patient care and teaching responsibilities. Areas of particular interest include Phase 1-2 clinical trials, gastrointestinal cancer, lung and/or head and neck cancer, genitourinary oncology, and hematologic malignancy. The section of hematology/oncology now includes 17 full-time faculty, 18 voluntary faculty, and it supports active clinical services and training programs of Ben Taub General Hospital, St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital, as well as the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Medical Center. More than 5000 new cancer patients are seen each year in hospitals served by the College. The Cancer Center includes 278 members with more than $100M in cancer-related grant support and it includes strong programs in breast cancer, prostate cancer, cell and gene therapy, pediatric oncology, nuclear receptors, cancer prevention and population sciences, molecular carcinogenesis and tumor biology. There are developing programs in several other areas. Close interactions among faculty in the Cancer Center and those at MD Anderson, Rice and other Texas Medical Center institutions are encouraged. A naming gift of $100M was recently given to the Cancer Center for recruitment and program development among other initiatives.
