Associate Scientist, Protein Engineering (Lab)

This position will report to the Lab Head, Protein Engineering and will be based in Vancouver, B.C.

Key Responsibilities

  • Designs, implements and executes research and feasibility studies in collaboration with a larger research team.
  • Records experimental data and reviews experimental process and results with Supervisor and/or coworkers. Provides input into future investigations.
  • Presents the progress of experiments to departmental team.
  • May coordinate inter-departmental activities and research efforts.
  • Prepares study reports.
  • May direct and mentor junior staff.
  • Contributes to scientific literature and conferences.
  • Maintains a clean, organized and operational lab.
  • Conducts all activities in accordance with scientific standards, OH&S regulations and established policies and practices.
  • Liaises with project team leads and laboratory personnel to ensure advancement of projects and programs.
  • Fosters effective and collaborative working relationships across the organization.

Qualifications and Experience

  • PhD in a scientific discipline or equivalent in engineering, and a minimum of 0 to 2 years’ related experience (may include post-doctoral experience) or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Proven interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively as a member of cross-functional team. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
  • Effective critical and analytical thinking skills, incorporating integrity in all decision making
  • Meticulous record keeping and reporting skills
  • Effective organization skills and the ability to manage concurrent deliverables and work effectively in a challenging, milestone-driven environment
  • Effective oral and scientific/technical writing communication skills
  • Effective understanding of protein chemistry
  • Effective level of scientific knowledge and technical skills, which may include:
  • molecular biology
  • protein expression using mammalian and bacterial expression systems
  • protein purification using immunoaffinity, IEX, SEC, IMAC, HIC
  • protein analytical techniques such as PAGE, Western blotting, CE-SDS
  • bioactivity characterization of proteins using techniques such as ELISA, MSD, SPR, BLI, KINEXA, flow cytometry
  • protein biophysical characterization techniques such as UPLC-SEC, RF-HPLC, HIC, DSC, DSF, AUC, DLS, cIEF, LC-MS
  • protein modification techniques such as bioconjugation, redox chemistry, enzymatic digestion cell-based proliferation, viability and cytotoxicity assays
