Senior Research Associate, Protein Engineering (Lab)

About the Position

The Senior Research Associate will provide hands-on support for protein engineering lab efforts in the discovery and development of new therapies. The ideal candidate will have a broad background in protein science, is able to interact across functional groups, and capable of working in a highly dynamic and fast-paced environment.

This position will report to the Lab Head, Protein Engineering and will be based in Vancouver, BC.

Key Responsibilities

• Performs advanced experiments and provides support to research programs and projects.
• Analyzes and reviews data, draws conclusions and makes recommendations for future investigations.
• Troubleshoots methods and suggests novel and impactful changes.
• Writes procedures for methods requiring significant technical understanding, data manipulation and calculations. Identifies opportunities to improve existing methods and develop new technologies for project advancement.
• Participates in study design. Plans experiments to advance program.
• Prepares written reports and analysis of complex experiments.
• May participate in cross-departmental activities and present data.
• Provides technical guidance to project staff. May review work of team members for thoroughness and completeness.
• May contribute to co-authorship or author scientific papers.
• Seeks to understand ongoing projects through attention to scientific literature, industry publications and internally generated data and employs this understanding to improve contribution to project goals.
• Maintains a clean, organized and operational lab. 
• Conducts all activities in accordance with scientific standards, OH&S regulations and established policies and practices.
• Actively works to foster an environment of effective and collaborative working relationships across the organization.

Qualifications and Experience

• BSc in a scientific discipline and a minimum of 5 to 8 years’ related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience
• Proven interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively as a member of cross-functional team. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships

• Good organizational skills and the ability to work effectively in a high paced, fast changing environment. Results-oriented
• Critical observation skills and good statistical analysis capability
• Advanced oral, presentation and scientific/technical writing skills
• Ability to present data at team and inter-departmental meetings
• Advanced knowledge and experience in lab techniques, which should include some of the following:

• Recombinant protein expression: e.g. mammalian and bacterial systems
• Protein purification: e.g. protein A/G/L, IEX, IMAC, HIC, SEC
• Protein characterization: e.g. PAGE, western blotting, SDS-CE, cIEF, UV/VIS spectrometry, ELISA, MSD, SPR, BLI, flow cytometry, UPLC-SEC, DSC, DSF, DLS, AUC, LC-MS
• Protein modification: e.g. bioconjugation, redox chemistry, enzymatic digestion
• Cell-based proliferation, viability and cytotoxicity assays
