The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) in Charleston, S.C., seeks an accomplished and entrepreneurial leader to serve as its next Chief for the Division of Hematology & Oncology and Deputy Director for the Hollings Cancer Center. This is an extraordinary opportunity for a physician scientist to substantially grow the division and to play an integral role in the rapid growth of the state's only National Cancer Institute (NCI) designated cancer center.

The chief & deputy director is responsible for ongoing development of the Hematology & Oncology Division, including in the three major mission areas – research, education, and clinical care. The chief & deputy director will be tasked recruiting a large cohort of additional clinical and physician-scientist faculty, and in enhancing the strategic goals of the Division and cancer center. The Division currently has 18 faculty and 12 fellows, and expects to double the size of its faculty in the near term. As Hollings Deputy Director, there is the opportunity to recruit into additional open leadership positions, while furthering its translational research efforts and partnering closely with the Director.

The Hollings Cancer Center has NCI approved programs in developmental cancer therapeutics, cancer immunology, cancer biology, and cancer control, as well as multiple shared resource cores and state-of-the-art clinical and research facilities. These include a highly developed clinical trials office with a growing multi-center trials network and Phase I trials program, a translational science laboratory, a robust biorepository and tissue analysis resource, and a clean-cell evaluation and therapy facility. In addition, clinical and translational research at The Hollings Cancer Center and the university is supported by an NIH-funded Clinical and Translational Science Award.

MUSC, the state's only academic health science center, consists of six colleges and educates and trains more than 3,000 students and 750 residents. The university and its affiliates have collective annual budgets in excess of $2.6 billion and annual research funding in excess of $250 million. MUSC operates a 700-bed medical center, which includes more than 100 outreach locations across the state. MUSC and MUSC Health are in the midst of an exciting period of growth with increases in extramural research funding, support for expanding telehealth activities, new inpatient and clinical outreach facilities, and the recent acquisition of four community hospitals. MUSC provides tertiary care services for all adult and pediatric conditions, making MUSC the state’s quaternary care center.

Located on the Atlantic coast, Charleston boasts one of the nation's most historic downtown areas and offers a superb quality of life including easy access to ocean beaches, extensive outdoor recreation, and internationally renowned arts, cuisine and cultural events.

Candidates must possess an M.D., M.D./Ph.D. or equivalent degree with board certification and have a track record of peer reviewed extramural funding in clinical/translational oncology research. The successful candidate must also demonstrate progressive and collaborative administrative hematology/oncology leadership experience in an integrated academic medical center environment ideally within an NCI-designated cancer center setting; and possess national recognition for achievement in research, educational and clinical pursuits that would warrant appointment to the academic rank of professor with tenure at MUSC.

Inquiries, nominations and applications are invited. Questions or materials should be sent electronically to MUSC's consultants Jeff Schroetlin and Megan Welch, at mwelch@wittkieffer.com or call 630-575-6904.
