Does Medical Oncology Interest You?

“Best of both worlds”

There are many roads to the best of both worlds, our generalist SMO’s can and do tend to come from many career pathways and this role in Medicine Oncology will be no exception, (i.e. you could equally be a Generalist Physician with an interest in Oncology, or you could be a Specialist General Oncologist).

There is a lot of talk about work/life balance but our Specialist Medical Staff in particular will tell you that, here in Timaru, you truly can have the best of both worlds.

You’ll find significant professional challenge in the breadth of the ‘generalist’ nature of our Oncologist role, covering both inpatients and outpatients effectively, while supporting and promoting best practice across both primary & secondary care colleagues seeking to tap into your clinical expertise.

Maintaining close association with neighbouring DHB’s Oncology Services will be an essential expectation (both in terms of enabling your professional collegial support networks, plus ensuring SCDHB isn’t out of step with regional approaches as appropriate). Despite these demands, the position will still allow plenty of time to enjoy life outside of work too, as the workload is considered to be realistic.

As a clinical growth area, SCDHB has identified the need to inject genuine resource into this critical aspect of medicine, in order to bolster our existing SMO team and offer all of our local patients the care and attention they deserve. We have a highly skilled and strong SMO community across all disciplines, which we would describe as being a very passionate team, proud of their profession and well recognized for the services they provide locally.

Here is a rare opportunity to create and design the future of our Oncology service within your role and the wider team. We are open to innovative approaches due to this being a new position, so your challenge is to make a real concrete difference on behalf of our patients.

Timaru is an easy place to live, family friendly and with easy access to an astounding array of outdoor activities – beaches, ski fields, lakes and mountains. When it comes to public amenities you are spoiled for choice with some first-rate cafes/restaurants, arts, tennis, aquatic, sporting venues all within the town boundary. Nothing is far away, traffic jams are basically unheard of, property is still relatively affordable and educational facilities and options superb.

Company

South Canterbury District Health Board serves about 55,000 people living in the beautiful region bounded by the grandeur of the Southern Alps to the west, the sparkling Pacific Ocean to the east, and the Rangitata and Waitaki rivers to the north and south. South Canterbury includes the main centre of Timaru, located approximately halfway between Christchurch and Dunedin on the South Island’s east coast, and a number of picturesque towns and smaller rural settlements.

We’re the fourth smallest of New Zealand’s 21 district health boards (DHBs), with approximately 950 staff and contractors and a 2012/13 budget of $166 million. As a DHB we have very wide responsibilities for publicly-funded health and disability services, including providing and funding the delivery of services in the South Canterbury district. About half our budget is devoted to a range of primary health and disability support service providers like general practitioners, pharmacies, well child nurses, Maori health providers, dentists, community mental health, aged residential care facilities and home-based care providers. The other half of our budget funds the full range of secondary-level hospital services (including mental health) available through Timaru Hospital and Community Services.
