IU School of Medicine - IU Simon Cancer Center – Vera Bradley Foundation Center for Breast Cancer
Academic Faculty, Translational Research and Breast Cancer Medicine

Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM) in conjunction with the Indiana University Simon Cancer Center (IUSCC) is seeking a collaborative and innovative physician-scientist to join the Vera Bradley Foundation Center for Breast Cancer Research (VBFC). We are seeking candidates at the level of Assistant or Associate Professor whose research focus will complement and strengthen existing efforts in Precision Genomics, triple negative breast cancer, or the biologic determinants of health care disparities. Both tenure- and non-tenure track applicants will be considered.

This position presents a unique opportunity to join the expanding clinical and research community of the VBFC within NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center, the IUSCC. IUSM is the nation's largest allopathic medical school with 9 campuses across Indiana. The IUSCC is a patient care, research, and educational organization, located on the school's main campus in Indianapolis. The IUSCC research physicians and scientists include more than 150 members who lead over300 clinical trials in pediatric and adult cancers. Indiana University Health is our clinical health system with facilities statewide. In January 2020, the Joe and Shelly Schwarz Cancer Center will open at one of our suburban hospitals. The successful candidate will be a part of the multi-disciplinary breast cancer team serving patients at both cancer centers. The IUSCC is in an exciting growth phase, having increased NCI funding by 47% over the last five years, resulting in Comprehensive designation in 2019. In addition to the IUSCC's research strengths, there are ample opportunities for collaboration within the institution including:

  • The Komen Normal Tissue Bank and IUSCC (https://komentissuebank.iu.edu/) is the world's only repository of normal breast tissue, now with over 4,700 samples supporting over 140 research projects worldwide.
  • The Translational Breast Cancer Research Consortium (TBCRC, http://pub.emmes.com/study/bcrc/) is a collaborative group founded in 2005 to conduct innovative and high-impact clinical trials for breast cancer. Collectively, the 19 TBCRC member institutions work together to foster trial development in a collegial environment that enhances cross-institutional collaborations. IUSCC has been among the top three enrolling members for the last two years.
  • The Hoosier Cancer Research Network (HCRN), is home to over 200 clinical investigators nationwide. The HCRN is an independent clinical trials consortia whose primary focus is on Phase II and III clinical trials. IUSCC serves as the main research base.
  • The Big Ten Cancer Research Consortium (BTCRC) consists of 14 cancer centers, representing the largest collection of NCI-designated Cancer Centers of all athletic conferences in the country. The BTCRC focuses on early phase collaborative clinical trials.
  • The Brown Center for Immunotherapy, which houses six GMP rooms and a Clinimacs Prodigy, a Precision Immunology Laboratory Services (PILS) Core with state of the art flow cytometric, CYTOF, and imaging flow cytometry, a mixed use facility including BSL-3 ISO-7 clean rooms for viral vector production and cell manufacturing of allogeneic cell products
  • The NIH/NCRR National Gene Vector Biorepository for the NCRR and the lentiviral production site for the NIH/NHLBI Gene Therapy Resources Program
  • The IU School of Medicine's Precision Health Initiative is a $120 million investment intended to place us at the cutting edge of personalized medicine, biomedical research and healthcare delivery. Triple negative breast cancer is a major pillar of the PHI, including creation of a richly-annotated cohort and development of novel patient-derived xenografts.
  • The Indiana Collaborative Initiative for Talent Enrichment (INCITE), a $25 million grant from the Lilly Endowment, is a partnership between IU School of Medicine and local, non-academic partners such as the Indiana Biosciences Research Institute, Eli Lilly and Co., Roche, Dow, Cook, BioCrossroads, IU Health and Eskenazi Health to attract top scientists

Candidates should be physician scientists who are MDs or MD/PhDs eligible for the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. Please include: (1) detailed curriculum vitae, (2) the names and addresses of three references, (3) a two page summary of research accomplishments, and (4) a two page summary of future research interests and plans.
