NCI is seeking an exceptional and visionary leader to serve as the Deputy Director, Center for Global Health (CGH).  The NCI is the principal agency of the Federal Government for cancer research and for carrying out the National Cancer Program.  The Center for Global Health provides a focus for the NCI’s global research programs, membership in multi-national cancer organizations and diplomatic relations related to cancer research and control of cancer on an international basis; pursues strategies directed toward control of cancer on a global scale; coordinates international research efforts with other NCI components, NIH Institutes, and other governmental and non-governmental organizations and institutions, both domestically and internationally, regarding cancer research and control strategies; develops programs in cancer research in designated countries to achieve mutually beneficial goals that translate into advances in both research and clinical effectiveness in specific populations; evaluates international developments in program areas of responsibility, prepares analyses of international needs and research efforts, and recommends new and/or continuing program emphasis; and provides in-country assistance for NCI and NIH research programs and other efforts.

The Deputy Director, CGH collaborates with the Director, Center for Global Health, in providing vision and leadership to the global cancer community, including supporting global cancer research partnerships and collaboration across the NCI, NIH, other Federal agencies and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) to achieve mutually beneficial goals in cancer research and control internationally.  The Deputy Director has the following responsibilities:

• Serves as a supervisory scientist who collaborates with the Director, Center for Global Health, in providing program management of operational budget, research portfolio and supervision of 30 scientific and administrative employees.
• Oversees global cancer research programs and provides input into the design and conduct of impactful and innovative research in a variety of income settings throughout the world, relying on his/her experience studying cancer and/or managing cancer programs in such challenging environments.  Provides scientific and programmatic leadership with respect to key basic, clinical, and population research topics across the continuum of global cancer control.
• Engages with US government staff, non-US government staff, and other stakeholders in relevant countries to brief them on Center for Global Health activities and garner support as needed.  Experience in fostering these types of diplomatic and collaborative relationships is critical for this position.
• Develops strategies to overcome unforeseen difficulties to ensure progress toward Center for Global Health goals. Integrates and coordinates the efforts of others within and external to the Center for Global Health and NCI to improve effectiveness, efficiencies, and synergies of global health and international cancer research programs and projects.

The successful candidate will be an experienced scientist with this rare combination of expertise in multi-national, multi-center research studies, safety oversight, and global health for a global clinical research program.   The successful candidate will also have a vision for international cancer research programs to transform and improve cancer research. 

Qualifications:

• Applicants must possess a doctoral level degree (e.g. Ph.D. or M.D.) in the health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work or equivalent. 
• Knowledge and experience in global cancer research.
• Ability to interact with senior extramural and intramural researchers, industrial partners, other government agencies, and other global cancer control partners.
• Leadership experience in managing a highly visible global cancer research and training program.
• Leadership experience in supervising staff, managing multi-million-dollar budgets, and overseeing complex global research contracts.
• Experience in leading multidisciplinary groups in developing global science strategies and initiatives.
• Ability to represent NCI at international meetings and with diverse stakeholders.
• Experience serving as a manager of complex global health programs.

The successful candidate will be appointed under the Title 42(f) authority at a salary commensurate with experience. A recruitment or relocation bonus may be available, and relocation expenses may be paid.
