The George Washington University (GW) School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SMHS) seeks nominations and applications for a visionary leader to direct the GW Cancer Center. The Director will work collaboratively to build upon the momentum of the last five years to enhance the clinical, research, and academic activities to establish GW Cancer Center as the leading provider of cancer care and cancer research in the nation’s capital region. The Director will drive the development of a premier clinical cancer program by leading the expansion of the oncology service line, enhancing research programs, guiding fundraising initiatives, and accelerating progress toward eradicating cancer through a strategy leading to NCI comprehensive cancer designation.

The GW Cancer Center provides outstanding cancer care, conducts groundbreaking research to discover new treatments for cancer and offers high-quality education, training and community outreach programs. GW Cancer Center membership draws over 180 participating faculty from GW SMHS, Milken Institute School of Public Health at GW, the GW School of Nursing, the GW School of Engineering, the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences at GW, and cancer care leaders at the GW Medical Faculty Associates, GW Hospital, and the Cancer Center at Children’s National Hospital. The Cancer Center Director will hold the rank of full professor in a department that aligns with their discipline, will report to the Vice President for Health Affairs and Dean of the School of Medicine and Health Sciences, and is the most senior faculty member responsible for the integration of cancer research activities across the GW campus.

The dynamic and respected GW Cancer Center Director will be a nationally recognized academic physician with a strong record of leadership and scholarly contributions to advance the disciplines of cancer care. The appointee will have deep knowledge of discovery in clinical and translational research, and a record of extramurally funded research in a cancer related field. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated ability to grow and lead programs in a complex academic environment, ensuring that the Cancer Center continues to bring value to its many internal and external stakeholders and distinction to GW Cancer Center nationally.

Candidate Qualifications

-A distinguished academic record and national reputation based on expertise in the common cancer(s) in the nation as evidenced by record of publications, major journal editorial responsibility, a senior officer position in major national organizations, regular participation on NIH study sections, or equivalent experience.

-Proven ability to develop and drive strategy for both clinical and research initiatives, to work collaboratively across entities, and disciplines and to advocate for organizational values.

-Experience in building and expanding multidisciplinary care models for delivery of cancer services including the ability to empower underserved patient populations in our community, improve health care delivery, ensure equal access to cancer care, and eliminate cancer health disparities.

- Experience in facilitating the development of clinical trials and developing a culture that promotes enrollment in studies throughout the health care system.

-Success in program direction, and the recruitment, retention, and mentorship of clinicians, researchers and administrative leadership.

-Leadership experience in an NCI designated Cancer Center in a matrixed practice environment, is strongly preferred.

-A personal track record of extramural research funding from federal sources.

-An MD degree or equivalent with board certification in an oncology related discipline, and an unrestricted state medical license. Academic credentials that merit appointment as a Full Professor.

-Personal characteristics of integrity, maturity, collegiality, and honesty aligned with the Mission and Vision of the GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences.
