NCI is seeking an exceptional and visionary leader to serve as a Physician in the Center for Global Health (CGH).  The NCI is the principal agency of the Federal Government for cancer research and for carrying out the National Cancer Program.  The Center for Global Health provides a focus for the NCI’s global research programs, membership in multi-national cancer organizations and partnerships related to cancer research and control on an international basis; pursues strategies directed toward control of cancer on a global scale; coordinates international research efforts with other NCI components, NIH Institutes, and other governmental and non-governmental organizations and institutions, both domestically and internationally; develops programs in cancer research in designated countries to achieve mutually beneficial goals that translate into scientific and programmatic advances in specific populations; evaluates international developments in program areas of responsibility, prepares analyses of international needs and research efforts, and recommends new and/or continuing program emphasis; and provides in-country assistance for NCI and NIH research programs and other efforts.

The Physician, CGH collaborates with the Director, Center for Global Health, serving as a senior international clinical research expert regarding implementing state-of-the-art international clinical studies including clinical trials.  The Physician will provide scientific expertise and oversight of the CGH clinical research program, including development, standardization, implementation and execution of policies, procedures, and standard conduct for clinical research to ensure that all CGH-sponsored international clinical research is conducted in full compliance with all applicable national regulations and policies and meets established global standards of quality, integrity, and ethics.   The Physician has the following responsibilities:

  • Serves as key advisor to the Director, CGH, and other NCI leaders and scientists on international clinical research issues to provide objective, experienced-base guidance, and oversight.
  • Plans, evaluates and coordinates international clinical research programs to accelerate implementation of state-of-the-art international clinical research including clinical trials.
  • Determines the scientific sufficiency and/or need for revision, amplifications or clarification of the NCI international clinical research programs.
  • Coordinates new approaches in international cancer research programs with academia, industry, or other parts of the Federal government.
  • Evaluates the activities and scientific accomplishments of the grant and contract supported program administered by CGH, including the identification of gaps in scientific or clinical areas for designing additional programmatic initiatives.
  • Provides mentorship and support to NCI fellows and investigators seeking to develop global cancer clinical research projects.
  • Works with the Director, CGH, and other partners to prioritize highest impact scientific opportunities in global cancer clinical research.

The successful candidate will be an experienced physician with a combination of expertise in global clinical research programs including clinical trials across multiple countries.   The successful candidate will also have a vision for international cancer research programs to yield scientific impacts that transform and improve global cancer research and control. 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Applicants must possess an M.D. or equivalent degree from a foreign medical school must provide education and medical knowledge equivalent to accredited schools in the United States; a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a Physician from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States; and must be board certified in a clinical oncologic discipline (medical oncology, pediatric oncology, radiation oncology, surgical oncology). 
  • Knowledge and experience in global cancer research including clinical trials.
  • Ability to interact with senior extramural and intramural researchers, industrial partners, other government agencies, and other global cancer control partners.
  • Leadership experience in international organizations.
  • Leadership experience in international clinical trials, including protocol development, conduct, analysis, and dissemination.
  • Leadership in managing multi-million-dollar budgets and overseeing complex global research contracts.
  • Experience in leading multidisciplinary groups in developing global science strategies and initiatives.
  • Ability to represent NCI at international meetings and with diverse stakeholders.
