Founded in 1819, the University of Cincinnati embarks upon its third century – building on the past and defining the future by leading urban, public universities into a new era of innovation and impact through its strategic direction, Next Lives Here. Underscoring the power of creativity, ingenuity, invention and inclusion, what’s Next will accelerate our unrivaled momentum, evidenced by eight straight years of record enrollment and rankings that include placement among America’s top 100 public universities by U.S. News & World Report. Home to a diverse student body of nearly 47,000 and more than 4,200 distinguished faculty, the university combines its Research 1 (Very High Research Activity) Carnegie Classification with a physical setting that The New York Times recently acclaimed as “the most ambitious campus design program in the country.

Job Overview
The Department of Environmental and Public Health Sciences (DEPHS) and the University of Cincinnati Cancer Center (UCCC) seek an outstanding biostatistician with a track record of cancer-focused research, high impact publications and strong leadership skills to serve as the inaugural Director of the UCCC Biostatistics and Bioinformatics Shared Resource (BBSR). Qualified applicants will be considered for a tenured Associate or Full Professor position in the Department of Environmental and Public Health Sciences; DEPHS is a focal point of methodological and collaborative research in the areas of biostatistics, bioinformatics and data science within the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, and a key partner in the development of the UC Cancer Center toward NCI-designation.

The Cancer Biostatistics and Bioinformatics Shared Resource (BBSR) will be composed of highly qualified biostatisticians, data scientists, and computational cancer biologists with complementary expertise in statistical and computational methods relevant to cancer research and will provide the UCCC research community with outstanding support in the design, conduct, and analysis of clinical trials as well as cancer-related basic, translational, and population studies. BBSR personnel will develop novel approaches to address emerging methodological challenges, ensure the use of state-of-the-art statistical and data analysis methods, and enhance the quality of science across the UCCC.  The Director will begin Phase I of building the Cancer BBSR by collaborating with and leveraging existing faculty talent and resources residing in DEPHS, other departments and divisions, and cancer-related programs across the UC campus, UC Health, and Children’s Hospital Medical Center; then proceeding to Phase II to close gaps through targeted recruitments if appropriate.

DEPHS is home to a talented and diverse faculty comprised of a range of environmental and public health specialties including biostatistics, bioinformatics, epidemiology, environmental genetics and molecular toxicology, environmental and industrial hygiene, environmental and occupational medicine, and public health sciences. DEPHS is a pioneering center of and a leader in research on how genetic and environmental factors affect susceptibility to diseases and houses several NIH and CDC funded research centers and training programs, such as NIH/NIEHS P30 Center for Environmental Genetics (CEG) and NIOSH/CDC T42 Education Research Center (ERC).

Essential Functions

  • Lead and director the UCCC Biostatistics and Bioinformatics Shared Resource (BBSR)
  • Contribute to methodological and collaborative research in the areas of biostatistics, bioinformatics and data science
  • Participate as a key partner in the development of the UC Cancer Center toward NCI-designation.

Required Education
Doctoral degree in biostatistics, bioinformatics, or related field with a strong background in cancer-focused methodological and collaborative research.

Additional Qualifications Considered
The successful candidate will be expected to assist in developing extramural grant applications in collaboration with cancer center investigators, including SPORE, program-project, and other multi-project grants, provide mentorship and training to UCCC-affiliated junior faculty and hematology/oncology fellows and cancer program clinical trainees, as well as training opportunities for students in DEPHS’s programs in biostatistics, big data, and epidemiology.

Applications will be accepted until the position is filled. Please submit all application materials, including complete curriculum vitae, a brief description or personal statement of research interests, and the names of three references.
