Position Description:

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) is recruiting for a Physician in the Clinical Investigations Branch (CIB) to implement and oversee a pediatric cancer clinical trials portfolio, focusing on the incorporation of new molecular characterization and novel therapeutic strategies into clinical trials for children with cancer.  The CIB is part of the Cancer Therapy Evaluation Program (CTEP), Division of Cancer Treatment and Diagnosis (DCTD), which is an extramural division of the National Cancer Institute (NCI), National Institutes of Health (NIH).  This is a full-time government position in Rockville, Maryland.  The NCI sponsors and funds a broad range of clinical trials for children and adults with cancer through a variety of clinical trials groups and consortia. Through these programs, NCI works collaboratively with clinical investigators in NCI-funded clinical trial networks, often in collaboration with pharmaceutical industry partners, to optimize the development of cancer treatments in the public interest and to increase understanding of the cancers being studied.  The CIB is responsible for the scientific coordination and oversight of the NCI’s National Clinical Trials Network Program (NCTN), which includes the Children’s Oncology Group (COG). The CIB facilitates and supports clinical research, including surgical and radiation therapy, as well as chemo-, biologic- and immuno-therapies in the treatment of cancer.  In addition to COG, childhood cancer programs under the purview of CIB include the Pediatric Brain Tumor Consortium (PBTC), the Pediatric Early Phase Clinical Trials Network (PEP-CTN), the Childhood Cancer Survivor Study (CCSS) and the Pediatric Preclinical Testing Consortium (PPTC).  The CIB pediatric oncology physician will provide oversight for a clinical research portfolio for selected childhood cancers and, more generally, will support projects and programs directed at identifying and implementing the optimal use of molecular characterization methods into the diagnosis and treatment of childhood cancers. Areas of focus may include, but are not limited to, targeted therapy and immuno-oncology therapeutic approaches. In addition, the candidate may coordinate the efforts of the CTEP grant portfolio, along with similar efforts by other programs within DCTD, NCI and the NIH, and provide information and interpret the program to grant applicants, grantees, and the general public. 

Qualifications:

The individual must be a US citizen with an active medical license, should be at least mid-career, and have a clinical background with board certification in pediatric hematology/oncology. Experience and in-depth knowledge of the biology and genomics of childhood cancers, clinical trial design, and the development of novel therapies in the pediatric oncology setting is required.
