Job Details

The Pediatric Oncology Branch (POB), Center for Cancer Research (CCR), a division of the National Cancer Institute (NCI), National Institutes of Health (NIH), announces a call for applications for a Staff Clinician, an exciting opportunity intended for physicians with an interest in translating bench-to-bedside research to clinical trials, especially focused on hematologic malignancies.  POB focuses on developing novel therapy for children and young adults with relapsed/refractory malignancies and is part of CCR, NCI’s largest intramural program.

The successful candidate will take the lead in directing the clinical efforts of the Hematologic Malignancies Section (HMS) section through their leukemia, lymphoma and bone marrow transplant (LLBMT) trials program. With a primary emphasis on translation of phase 1, first-in-human or first-in-child novel immunotherapies—including CAR T-cell therapy, the program focuses on the treatment and management of children and young adults with refractory hematologic malignancies. The primary role will be to take responsibility for patients who come to the NIH Clinical Center for enrollment in cutting-edge clinical trials and provide oversight for all aspects of their care through eligibility evaluations, trial enrollment and treatment, coordination of referrals, toxicity management and analysis of outcomes and biologic correlates.

POB is a vibrant, multidisciplinary research community featuring innovative, high-impact bench-to-bedside research and close collaboration between physicians and scientists with a primary focus on pediatric cancers. Key skills include: familiarity with clinical study design, protocol development and patient-oriented research; knowledge related to the ethical and regulatory issues of conducting clinical research involving human subjects; experience with the collection and management of research data; and interest in community outreach and teaching pediatric oncology fellows.

Staff clinicians are appointed for a four-year renewable position at a competitive salary commensurate with subspecialty training and experience, and additional funds for travel and training. An attractive Federal Government employee benefits package includes health and life insurance coverage, a retirement savings program, and relocation expenses. Student loan repayment is possible through the NIH.

REQUIRED SKILLS:

Applicants must hold an M.D., D.O., or equivalent degree and be ABP board certified/eligible in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology with at least three years of experience beyond Hematology/Oncology training.

PREFERRED SKILLS:

Preferred experience includes prior clinical research or clinical trial writing experience, familiarity with CAR T-cell or HSCT management and toxicities and comfort with conducting basic statistical analyses preferred. Prior internal medicine training or experience with treating adolescent and young adult patients, in addition to prior pediatric training also preferred.
