Position Description:

The National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Cancer Institute (NCI) is recruiting for a Physician (GP-0602-15) in the Investigational Drug Branch (IDB) to implement and oversee a portfolio of novel cancer agents in an innovative clinical experimental therapeutics program.  The IDB is part of the Cancer Therapy Evaluation Program (CTEP), Division of Cancer Treatment and Diagnosis (DCTD), which is an extramural division of the NCI, NIH. 

NCI both sponsors and funds clinical trials of novel anti-neoplastic agents that have been approved for NCI-sponsored development (NCI-IND agents). In these programs, NCI works collaboratively with clinical investigators in NCI-funded clinical trial networks and with pharmaceutical industry partners to optimize the development of these anti-cancer drugs in the public interest and to increase understanding of the cancers being studied.

The IDB is responsible for implementing and providing subsequent pharmacovigilance monitoring for this wide-reaching oncology early drug development program. IDB physicians, together with CTEP colleagues, are responsible for shaping the clinical research development of NCI-IND agents and for shepherding clinical research proposals through the scientific and regulatory review necessary for the conduct of human trials. IDB supports translational and clinical research of NCI-IND agents primarily through the Experimental Therapeutics Clinical Trials Network (ETCTN) and also in other NCI-funded clinical trial networks. 

The IDB Physician acts as the medical monitor for clinical studies of the agents in the Physician’s IDB portfolio and provides reviews of clinical trial proposals and oversight of progress of clinical trials involving those agents.  The Physician’s responsibilities may also include providing patient care or services incident to patient care in the DCTD Developmental Therapeutics Clinic, or similar service.  In addition, the candidate may coordinate the efforts of the CTEP grant portfolio along with similar efforts by other programs within DCTD, NCI and the NIH and provide information and interpret the program to grant applicants, grantees and the general public.  Annual salary is commensurate with experience, with an estimated range of $225,000 to $255,000.

Qualifications:

This is a full-time government position in Rockville, Maryland. The individual must be a US citizen with an active medical license, should be at least mid-career, and have a clinical background and training in a relevant oncology sub-specialty (such as medical oncology, pediatric oncology, etc.), as well as experience and in-depth knowledge of cancer biology, pharmacology, clinical trial design, and the development of investigational anti-cancer drugs.
