The Center for Cancer Research (CCR), a division of the National Cancer Institute (NCI), National Institutes of Health (NIH), announces a call for applications for the Director of the Clinical Research Program in the Neuro-Oncology Branch (NOB).

The CCR is the NCI’s internal, federally funded cancer center where world leading physician-scientists are working on the cutting edge of medicine, developing clinical trials of new, sometimes “first-in-human” drugs and new treatment approaches. Closely knit clinical support teams are providing excellent quality of care for our patients and carrying out our clinical protocols with professionalism and compassion at the world’s largest dedicated research hospital on the NIH campus in Bethesda, Maryland.

The mission of the NOB is to develop novel diagnostic and therapeutic agents for patients with primary central nervous system tumors. This includes a large program focused on investigating rare cancers of the central nervous system. Given the continued growth trajectory of the clinical research program within the Branch, increasing number of opportunities to translate laboratory discoveries into clinical protocols and an increasing number of collaborations with outside institutions, consortia and cooperative groups, there is a need for a dedicated leader of the clinical research program. This independently funded research position will serve as part of Branch leadership by overseeing clinical research staff, managing clinic operations, participating in protocol development and engaging in protocol management.  The NOB and the CCR have extensive laboratory-based research activities enabling the development of innovative translational research studies and clinical trials with hypothesis-generating correlative biology.

A Senior Clinician manages a large research or clinical program with responsibility for substantial resources (≥$2M budget including personnel and space) which are subject and part of the Branch review by the NCI Board of Scientific Counselors. In addition to having outstanding clinical skills, Senior Clinicians will be expected to manage complex clinical programs, provide oversight of a large clinical trial portfolio of treatment and natural history studies, oversee diverse clinical support teams, and foster collaborations with principal investigators within disease-specific focus areas.  The successful candidate will be expected to manage a multidisciplinary clinical research team. The Senior Clinician will have available resources including funding for clinical trials, nurse practitioners, research nurses, and patient care coordinators.  In addition, the senior clinician will have access to a robust clinical trials infrastructure including data management, training, protocol support office, regulatory support, information systems and technology, and data safety monitoring. Resources will also be provided to enable the Senior Clinician to pursue individual research projects that will undergo periodic peer review commensurate with other investigators within the Branch.

Eligibility

Applicants must hold an M.D., or D.O degree and be board certified or board-eligible in neuro-oncology or medical oncology and have substantial patient care, research, managerial, and mentoring experience.  An established track record leading neuro-oncology studies and clinical protocols is required.  Given the major clinical research focus in the NOB, rare CNS tumor experience or expertise is preferred.  Candidates may be U.S. citizens, permanent residents, or possess (or be eligible for) an appropriate work visa and must have successfully completed subspecialty training at a U.S. accredited institution.
