G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC – James) and The Ohio State University College of Medicine are seeking an exceptional academic clinician with proven leadership skills to lead a highly successful surgical oncology program as the Director of the Division of Surgical Oncology in the Department of Surgery.

Responsibilities of this committed leader include:

  • Leading an academic division that consists of one of the largest and most experienced surgical oncology programs in the country
  • Developing and expanding academic, clinical and basic research activities devoted to the surgical evaluation and management of cancer
  • Mentoring and developing faculty throughout the division
  • Recruiting and retaining top talent to the program
  • Ensuring Ohio State’s Division of Surgical Oncology remains prominent on the national stage attributable to its innovative research, outstanding clinical care and strong outcomes
  • Participating with the executive leadership of the Department of Surgery and the OSUCCC – James

Ohio State Division of Surgical Oncology:

The Division of Surgical Oncology has 24 faculty members, including three PhDs, and performs 2,600 surgical cases per year. In the last year, Ohio State’s surgical oncology team published 130 studies in high-impact journals. The division has more than 60 active clinical trials and enrolled approximately 220 participants. In addition, the division boasts a portfolio of 30+ grants, including a SPORE grant in sarcoma, and more than $11 million in grant funding. The Division of Surgical Oncology has a two-year Surgical Oncology Fellowship Program with three accredited fellows annually, plus a one-year Hepatopancreatobiliary Fellowship Certification Program beginning in the latter half of 2022 and a one-year Breast Fellowship Program set to welcome its first fellow in 2023.

Surgical oncology physicians at Ohio State are trained in general surgery, have been certified by the American Board of Surgery, are fellowship trained in surgical oncology and are active members of the Society of Surgical Oncology. Special areas of expertise include gastrointestinal cancer, hepatopancreatobiliary cancer, breast cancer, cutaneous malignancies, endocrine neoplasms, head and neck cancer and soft tissue sarcoma.

The goal of Ohio State’s Division of Surgical Oncology is to provide excellence in clinical cancer care; to educate medical students, residents and fellows; and to conduct clinical and basic research. Our highly trained surgical specialists and subspecialists offer the most current research-based surgical treatment techniques — from complex open surgery to minimally invasive robotic-assisted procedures (one of the most experienced and highest volume robotic surgery centers in the nation) — to provide personalized care for each patient. The division collaborates in a multidisciplinary environment at the OSUCCC – James with world-renowned oncology experts across multiple disciplines, including medical oncology, radiation oncology, molecular and biologic pathologists, genetic scientist and others, to design precision-based treatments for each patient’s specific disease. Ohio State Department of Surgery:

Established in 1914, the Ohio State Department of Surgery has a long and respected tradition of excellence in clinical care, research and education. Under the leadership of Timothy Pawlik, MD, PhD, MPH, as chair, the department is composed of nine surgical specialty divisions and ten multidisciplinary centers. Collectively, the department performs over 18,000 cases annually and was ranked 6th according to the Blue Ridge rankings for National Institutes of Health funding among surgery departments nationally. The OSUCCC – James strives to create a cancer-free world by integrating scientific research with excellence in education and patient-centered care, a strategy that leads to better methods of prevention, detection and treatment. Ohio State is one of 52 National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated comprehensive cancer centers and one of only a few centers funded by the NCI to conduct both phase I and II clinical trials on anticancer drugs sponsored by the NCI. Qualifications:

  • Extensive experience building a successful clinical practice
  • Demonstrated leadership skills in building innovative programs, as well as developing faculty
  • Fellowship trained in surgical oncology or equivalent cancer-related discipline
  • Board certified in surgery
  • Wide-ranging teaching experience and robust research background
  • Qualify for academic appointment at an advanced rank
  • An active research program in basic, translational, clinical or health services research is strongly desired
