Associate Professor, Breast Medical Oncology and Director of Clinical Research

Jefferson Health and the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center (SKCC) seek a clinician and research leader to join the Breast Medical Oncology team. A leading center for practice-changing discovery and comprehensive cancer treatment, SKCC has been known as a Designated Center by the National Cancer Institute since 1996 and is one of only 71 institutions in the nation to hold this prestigious recognition. The SKCC is part of the 18-hospital academic health system (Thomas Jefferson University & Jefferson Health) spanning across two states and is the largest health system in the Philadelphia region. 

Position Overview

The successful candidate for the Associate Professor, Breast Medical Oncology and Director of Clinical Research position will join the talented and dedicated faculty of the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center – Jefferson Breast Oncology program.  Reporting to Dr.  Maysa Abu-Khalaf, MD Professor and Director of Medical Oncology Breast Program, the Associate Professor will have responsibilities in all three areas of the tripartite mission of academic medicine: research, education and clinical care.  This is an outstanding opportunity to work in a highly collaborative and patient centered environment that is also recognized as one of the first 30 Centers in the country to be accredited by the National Accreditation Program of Breast Centers (NAPBC). The position will require an individual with strong clinical research track record and a demonstrated ability to lead an expansive clinical and research portfolio.  This individual will provide ongoing leadership and management of a number of ongoing research projects, lead new high impact clinical trials, help publish the unique experiences, and build the clinical portfolio and patient populations of the program.   

One of the responsibilities of the role will be to significantly contribute to the growth of the breast oncology research program at Jefferson and SKCC.  Ideally, the successful candidate will bring a national reputation/presence that will also fuel the growth of the program.  This is an exceptional opportunity for a talented breast oncologist and clinical trialist to be part of a program poised for transformational growth at a widely recognized Cancer Center.

The Associate Professor’s/Director’s responsibilities will also include the following:

• Providing direct clinical care, leading and conducting clinical research, and teaching fellows and residents.
• Serving as principal investigator on investigator initiated clinical trials, cooperative group and pharmaceutical clinical trials for breast cancer.
• Overseeing the breast oncology clinical trials portfolio, serving as PI on clinical trials, and working with industry to become a “go-to” partner for breast cancer clinical trials.
• Assuming other leadership opportunities as appropriate within the SKCC-Jefferson Breast Oncology Program and the Department of Medical Oncology.
• With the Breast Oncology Director, develop and implement the Breast Oncology strategic clinical research plan. 
• Also with the Breast Oncology Director, monitor faculty academic productivity with respect to clinical research, publications, and active participation in enrolling patients to clinical trials.
• Serve as mentor to junior faculty and researchers of all stages of clinical research in the Breast Cancer program when appropriate. 
• Participate in SKCC, the Department of Medical Oncology and Breast Oncology research and clinical activities, residency and fellowship training, and participate in tumor boards.  
• Partner with Solid Tumor faculty and others in the comprehensive care of Breast Oncology patients. 

Qualifications

• At least 3 years of clinical experience in managing breast cancer patients.
• Board certified in Medical Oncology, and hold a current license to practice medicine.
• Record of excellence in patient care. 
• Recognized as clinical trials leader with experience as a Principal Investigator.

• Demonstrated ability to build strong, sustainable partnering relationships.
• Demonstrated experience working with and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member.

Additionally, candidates should possess the following:

• Currently a Associate Professor (eligible for promotion to Professor) or Professor at a Breast Oncology Program at a system of comparable size
• Must be board certified or eligible in Medical Oncology and hold or be eligible for medical licensure in Pennsylvania
