Mayo Clinic Bioservices is a nationally recognized state-of-the-art research organization supporting the collection, processing, and storage of all types of biologic samples in support of basic, population, and translational research as well as clinical trial activities. This is the central biobank for several national repositories including All of Us Research Program (AoURP), Post-Acute Sequelae of SARS CoV-2 infection (PASC) initiative, and Nutrition for Precision Health (NPH).

The Biorepository Core Laboratory (one component of Mayo Clinic BioServices) is enterprise wide, with activities spanning Mayo Clinic Rochester, Mayo Clinic Florida, and Mayo Clinic Arizona, thus providing a national presence. The laboratories support the pre-analytical sample processing needs of the research and clinical trial community by providing: 1) sample accessioning; 2) sample processing (blood, other biologic fluids, cultured cells and tissue); 3) nucleic acid extraction; 4) preparation and cryopreservation of mononuclear cells; 5) distribution of products (i.e., serum, plasma, DNA, RNA, cells, tissue); 6) short and long term storage of products (ambient, -20°C, -80°C, liquid nitrogen; and finally 7) kit production and distribution for biospecimen collection.  The laboratories support several hundred Mayo Clinic Investigators, several research programs (Mayo Clinic Comprehensive Cancer Center, Center for Individualized Medicine, SPOREs, and Disease Groups) and a growing number of external clients, including several NIH funded programs, such as the All of Us Research Program, National Clinical Trial Network (NCTN) Alliance/NCORP, ACCRU, Post-Acute Sequelae of SARS CoV-2 infection (PASC) Initiative, and Nutrition for Precision Health (NPH).

Rochester, MN – A fully automated College of American Pathologists Biorepository accredited laboratory with a staff of over 100 FTE, occupying approximately 100,000 square feet of laboratory and storage space and 1 satellite laboratory.

Jacksonville, FL – A College of American Pathologists Biorepository accredited laboratory with a staff of over 20 FTE, occupying approximately 5,000 square feet of laboratory and storage space and 2 satellite laboratories. It is one of the main laboratories supporting clinical trials.

Phoenix/Scottsdale, Arizona - A laboratory with a staff of over 10 FTE, occupying approximately 16,000 square feet of newly built laboratory and storage space (2022) and 2 satellite laboratories working towards the College of American Pathologists Biorepository accreditation. It is one of the main laboratories supporting clinical trials.

The Mayo Clinic Center for Individualized Medicine (CIM) is recruiting 3 Lab Directors, one for each of three Biorepository Core Laboratories in MN, FL and AZ. These positions are tenure-track faculty level position with an academic appointment.

This individual will help oversee the day-to-day operations of the Biorepository Core Laboratory.  Responsibilities include the following:

     * Models leadership skills, positive attitude, good judgement, team building and respect for others

     * Provides leadership in improving operational and financial performance with effective decision making, planning and implementation

     * Accepts accountability for performance

     * Encourages open discussion of ideas and suggestions

     * Develops both short-term and long-term goals and objectives for the laboratory

     * Proactively works with staff to ensure optimal laboratory operations; oversees implementation of solutions to problems in a timely manner

     * Provides operational and technical guidance to laboratory work units

     * Oversees laboratory protocol development and process improvement, project/grant development and management, mentoring and career development

     * Develops/maintains cutting-edge technological infrastructure

     * Promotes and sets accountability for a fair and open culture and for an engaged workforce

     * Keeps abreast of current activities in the field, evaluating and implementing changes as needed

     * Ensures compliance with all regulatory agencies

     * Broad engagement in institutional initiatives and investigator led research protocols from design level to publication and clinical translation

     * Participates in laboratory management meetings and institutional committees as required

     * Foster collaboration across the organization to provide the best patient outcomes

     * Effective management that will align to Mayo Clinic’s 2030 strategy of identifying new cures for patients, connections through a digital strategy and transformational business models

A commitment to multidisciplinary team science, pursuing extramural funding related to Biobanking opportunities, and publishing/dissemination of research findings Credentials of a successful candidate will include a Ph.D., M.D. or M.D./Ph.D. with experience in laboratory management. 

Successful candidates must have excellent written/oral communication, organization and leadership skills. Preference will be given to applicants who have experience related to biobanking, molecular biology, clinical laboratory management, as well as hands-on experience in the technologies used in the core laboratory.
