Physician-Investigator, Physician Scientist with Breast Oncology Expertise Needed for Leadership Role in an NCI-Designated Comprehensive Cancer Center

The Division of Hematology/Oncology in the Department of Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh, UPMC Hillman Cancer Center and UPMC Magee-Womens Cancer Center seek an outstanding academic breast medical oncologist for a leadership position as Chief of Breast Medical Oncology. This position reports directly to the Division Chief of Hematology/Oncology. The ideal candidate for Chief of Breast Medical Oncology is an experienced physician-investigator or physician scientist with administrative experience and a midcareer to senior faculty with commensurate qualifications for appointment at the academic rank of Associate Professor or Professor, at the University of Pittsburg School of Medicine.

The Chief of Breast Medical Oncology will also serve as the co-Director of UPMC Magee-Womens Breast Cancer Program of UPMC Hillman Cancer Center, an NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center. In this role, the candidate will report to the Division Chief of Hematology/Oncology, the Executive Director of UPMC Hillman Cancer Center and the leadership of UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital.

The successful candidate will provide leadership by setting the vision for a nationally renowned and complex academic breast oncology program. The candidate will engage with institutional, departmental, and divisional leaders, as well as other key stakeholders to provide overall strategic direction to the breast cancer research and clinical programs of UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital and UPMC Hillman Cancer Center.

Other responsibilities include the clinical management of breast cancer patients and clinical direction of the Women’s Cancer Center outpatient clinics of UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital. Scientific leadership for development of a robust clinical trial portfolio of investigator-initiated and NCI's National Clinical Trials Network (NCTN)-sponsored trials, augmented by pharmaceutical-sponsored trials evaluating innovative new therapies for the large volume of UPMC patients with various subtypes and stages of breast cancer. The education and mentoring of fellows and house staff will also be key responsibilities.

The successful candidate will be expected to co-lead a SPORE (Specialized Program of Research Excellence)grant application to the National Cancer Institute (NCI), foster collaborative research between the basic and clinical faculty in the breast program to create a truly translational program on the leading edge of basic discovery, clinical translation and innovative and compassionate care that is unsurpassed regionally and revered nationally and internationally.

Successful candidates should have:

  • MD or MD/PhD degrees
  • Board Certification in Medical Oncology
  • Completion of an ACGME-accredited Hematology/Oncology Fellowship training program and significant work experience in Medical Oncology is required.
  • Unrestricted Medical License from the State of Pennsylvania (current or eligible)
  • Demonstrated clinical excellence and expertise in breast cancer research
  • Scholarly accomplishments evidenced by grant funding and high impact publications
  • Leadership and administrative experience

The Magee-Womens Breast Cancer Program of UPMC Hillman Cancer Center is renowned for its leadership of paradigm-defining cancer clinical trials over the last two decades.
