The National Cancer Institute (NCI) is seeking an outstanding, internationally recognized, and visionary clinician-scientist to lead the Genitourinary Malignancies Branch (GMB) in the NCI Center for Cancer Research (CCR). This position is part of the National Institutes of Health’s (NIH) world-class intramural research program (IRP) at the NIH Clinical Center and is equivalent to a tenured academic department chair. 

Current activities in the GMB include development of new strategies for treating genitourinary cancers based on a deep understanding of molecular pathways, evaluation of new therapeutic approaches through science-driven clinical research, and investigation of novel approaches in immunotherapy, hormonal therapy, chemotherapy combinations, and small-molecule targeted therapy.

The next leader of the GMB will be an exceptional clinician-scientist with a strong research program in any aspect of genitourinary cancer across the basic to clinical spectrum. The preferred candidate will be appointed as a tenured NIH Senior Investigator and will lead their own individual research program, supported by generous stable resources, including access to a wide range of NCI technology platforms and interdisciplinary collaborations within NCI, as well as at NIH and its Clinical Center.  

The incumbent will have the ability to build an impactful translational research program by setting the scientific direction and vision of the GMB. The Chief will define the overall scientific strategy and direction of GMB and will identify new research opportunities, including through recruitment of junior and senior faculty, management of laboratory resources, and mentoring and training. The new Chief will also have the opportunity to build collaborations and partnerships with the exceptionally strong genitourinary cancer community at NCI, including the Laboratory of Genitourinary Cancer Pathogenesis and the Urologic Oncology Branch. We expect the incoming Chief to have a strong, clearly articulated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.

CCR is home to nearly 250 basic and clinical research groups located on two campuses just outside of Washington, D.C. CCR is part of the NCI and makes up the largest component of the research effort at the NIH. Centrally supported by long-term funding, no need for grant support, and a culture of complete intellectual freedom, CCR scientists pursue the most important and challenging problems in cancer research. We collaborate with academic and commercial partners and advocacy groups across the world in efforts to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer. The successful candidate must be a board-certified or board-eligible M.D, M.D./Ph.D., or equivalent, have an established record in the field of genitourinary malignancies research, demonstrated leadership ability, proven effectiveness in mentoring and must meet the criteria for NIH tenure. NIH Intramural Senior Clinicians are eligible to apply. This position is located at the NIH campus in Bethesda, MD.

Salary will be commensurate with experience. A full civil service package of benefits (including health insurance, life insurance, and retirement) is available. This position is subject to a background investigation.

Candidates must be U.S. Citizens and must have successfully completed subspecialty training at a U.S. accredited institution in an appropriate field.

A Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from a foreign medical school must provide education and medical knowledge equivalent to accredited schools in the United States.  Evidence of equivalency to accredited schools in the United States is demonstrated by permanent certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates, a fifth pathway certificate for Americans who completed premedical education in the United States and graduate education in a foreign country, or successful completion of the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination.
