Director of Oncology Services of the Northern Regions

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Title:  Director of Oncology Services, Northern Regions for RWJBH; Attending, Medical Oncologist; Academic Appointment at Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey

Reports to:

1. Director, Vice Chancellor for Cancer Programs, Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences, Senior Vice President of Oncology Services, RWJBarnabas Health, and Oncology Lead, Rutgers RWJBH Combined Medical Group and/or his/her designee

2. Executive Vice President Northwest Region, RWJBarnabas Health

3. Executive Vice President Northeast Region, RWJBarnabas Health

Job Summary:

The Director of Oncology Services for the Northern Regions of RWJBH shall provide the necessary leadership and direction to enhance the quality, image and future growth of the Oncology programs across the Northern Regions of RWJBH including Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center, Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, Clara Maass Medical Center, Trinitas Medical Center, Rahway Hospital, and Jersey City Medical Center.  The Director will be an active leader in the development and implementation of the oncology strategic plan in collaboration with Rutgers Cancer Institute and the RWJBH oncology service line. This leader should have a regional and national reputation with a well-defined clinical care expertise and successful track record in clinical research in an area of need for the region and oncology service line.  The clinical areas of need include BMT and Cellular Therapy, Neuro Oncology, Phase 1 experimental therapeutics.

Responsibilities:

Among other duties as reasonably assigned, the Director of Oncology Services for the Northern regions shall provide the following services:

  1. Participate in providing Medical Oncology services at one or more system hospitals (i.e., Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center, Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, Clara Maass Medical Center, Trinitas Medical Center, Rahway Hospital, and Jersey City Medical Center), including supervision of coverage of the Departments during all periods of operation.
  2. Have responsibility for the professional supervision of medical professionals across the oncology programs of the Northern regions and create continuity between medical oncology, surgical oncology and radiation oncology and other cancer related services (e.g., pathology, radiology, nursing, etc).  
  3. Assist the Vice Presidents of Operations in the Northern Regions in providing leadership to clinical and administrative staff that support all aspects of the Oncology programs.
  4. Leverage his/her regional and national reputation for advanced clinical care and successful conduct and coordination of clinical research in their area of expertise throughout the Northern region.  
  5. Provide supervision and oversight of mid-level providers.  
  6. Perform chart reviews for accreditation by outside regulatory agencies.  
  7. Attend and participate in multidisciplinary tumor boards.  
  8. Help cultivate and work with the hospital leadership to lead Cancer Program Committee Meetings (e.g., Commission on Cancer, MIPS, MACRA, OCM, etc).  
  9. Participate and lead community and staff medical education programs as identified.  
  10. Report to Administration periodically, all relevant statistics, financial and staffing information, community outreach and Cancer Center progress.  
  11. Assist in the development of administrative rules, policies and regulations as they pertain to the Oncology programs.  
  12. Conduct ongoing performance improvement reviews in accordance with JCAHO, governmental and Hospital guidelines and RWJBH quality initiatives.  
  13. Participate and evaluate patient satisfaction surveys and programs with respect to services provided across the Oncology programs.      
  14. Direct the department’s Quality program, in-line with RWJBH system initiatives, to identify areas for improvement and to ensure performance is sustained.  
  15. Participate and cooperate in the preparation of annual budgets and report for the Oncology programs as required.
  16. Conduct ongoing departmental leadership meetings to address operational issues across the Oncology programs and collaborate across other cancer services.  
  17. Collaborate with hospital and RWJBH oncology leadership to build and integrate programs for the Northern regions (e.g., cancer clinical research; hospice/palliative care; survivorship; Cardio-Oncology, etc).  
  18. Collaborate with executive leadership and the RWJBH oncology service line to hire additional oncology specialists to adequately staff the expected volume increase of the Oncology program.  
  19. Participate and lead clinical decisions in the planning of the facilities and operations of any de novo Cancer Center facility projects, including integration and optimization of technology (e.g., electronic medical records; virtual tumor boards; tele-medicine, etc).  
  20. Collaborate with executive leadership to execute the RWJBH Oncology strategic plan for the RWJBH Oncology service line, including coordination of cancer services with leaders across the RWJBH oncology service line, especially with regional RWJBH hospitals and their respective leadership in the Northern regions.  
  21. Participate and collaborate with academic division chiefs and other academic leaders at the Rutgers Cancer Institute of NJ (CINJ) for bi-directional coordination of clinical and academic services.
