The Mays Cancer Center, home to UT Health San Antonio MD Anderson Cancer Center, is seeking to recruit an Associate Director for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (AD for DEI). This is a newly created role in alignment with the National Cancer Institute’s (NCI) commitment to ensure that all Americans share equally in the medical advances that result from cancer research, and that current disparities in the burden of cancer are reduced or eliminated.

The Mays Cancer Center will charge the inaugural AD for DEI to create a learning and working environment that promotes belonging, career development, inclusion, social justice, and health equity. The AD for DEI is a faculty leadership position that will be complemented by scientific and/or clinical cancer-relevant activities commensurate with the personal research, clinical and career interests of the individual.

The AD for DEI will have a primary faculty appointment in the Department at UTHSA that is aligned with the candidate’s academic training and expertise and will report academically to the respective Department Chair. The individual in this role will be a member of the Executive Committee of the Mays Cancer Center and will report in the DEI programmatic role to the Mays Cancer Center Executive Director.

Mays Cancer Center

The Mays Cancer Center is one of only four NCI-designated cancer centers in Texas and the only one in South Texas. The mission of the Mays Cancer Center is to reduce the burden of cancer in San Antonio, South Texas, and beyond, through the highest-quality cancer research, prevention, and treatment, as well as through the education of the next generation of scientists and clinicians focused on the prevention and treatment of cancer in South Texas.

The region served by Mays Cancer Center covers 38 counties and is home to a predominately Hispanic population, many members of whom are medically underserved. San Antonio’s population is 60% Hispanic; in areas of South Texas, 90% of the population is Hispanic.

Qualifications and Experience

  • MD and/or PhD, or equivalent graduate degree.
  • Master’s degree in Business Administration, Public Health, Healthcare Administration or related field preferred.
  • Experience in cancer disparities research, health equity research, and/or expertise in delivery of cancer care to underserved populations. Clinical and/or laboratory-based investigators are both encouraged to apply.
  • Demonstrated experience leading an effective DEI program(s) in academia, healthcare, or other sector.
  • Demonstrated ability to empower and guide others in leading discussions about DEI. 
  • Successful track record of strategic planning and building collaborative relationships among stakeholders to implement planned initiatives.
  • Ability to manage large-scale change management.
  • Certified Diversity Professional, Certified Diversity Executive or other similar diversity certification.
  • Ability to thrive and lead in a complex matrix environment. 
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build consensus and cooperation among various stakeholders.
  • A team builder and innovator who can mentor and direct others. 
  • A strategic thinker with a vision of for the optimal integration of DEI in the Mays Cancer Center and UTHSA strategic missions
