Section Chief Breast Surgery (Annapolis Mid Chesapeake Bay Region, Maryland)

 

Luminis Health, a three hospital, regional health system with a 90 site clinical enterprise is known for its high quality comprehensive cancer program. We are searching for an experienced, dynamic leader who is Fellowship trained, Board Certified Breast Surgeon to lead our system wide section of breast surgical oncology for Luminis Health.

 

The Section Chief of Breast Surgery is responsible for the continued development of breast surgical oncology clinical programs, research and academic endeavors throughout the system. The primary focus of this position will be the achievement of high value cancer care through the delivery of high quality scientifically based breast surgical care throughout the system.

 

There is an expectation that the successful candidate will maintain an active clinical practice with time allocated for the additional role and responsibilities of the section chief.

 

 

The comprehensive, regional community cancer program diagnoses over 2,500 new analytic cancer cases each year across the system. The comprehensive breast program is the busiest community program in the state with greater than 750 new breast cancer diagnosis each year. Our comprehensive cancer care and supportive services include well attended, disease-specific, weekly multidisciplinary breast tumor board supported by a patient-centered, team approach to cancer care. This includes our ACR accredited Womens Imaging Center of Excellence, dedicated breast medical oncologists, state of art radiation oncology,  integrative oncology/acupuncture , risk assessment prevention program, social workers, nutritionists, oncology rehabilitation including physical and occupational therapy, financial navigation, genetics counseling, oncology nurse navigators, patient and family advocates and other support programs. Additionally, we participate in a large number of cancer clinical trials, including industry and cooperative groups, as well as active participants and members of The Johns Hopkins Clinical Research Network.

 

This position will report directly to the Executive Medical Director of Cancer Services. The Section Chief will integrate/coordinate care with the Chairs of Surgery, Medicine and Women’s & Children’s as well as the Medical Directors of the cancer services, Chief Medical Officers and Executive Leaders to achieve goals.

 

KEY POINTS: the Section Chief of Breast Surgical Oncology, will provide:

 

 

Physician Leadership:

 

 

  • As a role model, colleague and mentor to other members of the section, provide for the continued growth, advancement and innovation for the Section of Breast Surgical Oncology.  Participate in strategic planning for the section along with other section chiefs and service line leaders, with a specific focus upon outward regional growth of the section. Develop a comprehensive annual operational plan (AOP) for the section, focusing upon executing and achieving the key strategic objectives and goals of Luminis Health. Provide leadership, expertise and continuous, real-time oversight and consideration for the selection of new programs that support ongoing and future growth, in addition to expeditious patient access to the highest quality and diverse care in the market.

 

 

Financial Stewardship:

 

  • Develop financial proformas to examine new guidelines, pathways, or necessary changes within the section.  Develop both a multi-tiered strategy and plan to grow and expand the overall patient treatment volume and expanding the services offered within the section, and all sites both regulated and unregulated. Implement financial sound strategies that will improve the total cost of cancer care through improved patient outcomes.

 

 

Quality Delivery of Care:

 

 

  • Participate in and advance performance and quality improvement activities which centrally encompass national organizations, guidelines, and benchmarks such as the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN), American College of Surgeons (ACoS-CoC), the Society of Surgical Oncology (SSO), American Society of Breast Surgeons (ASBrS) and ASCO’s Quality Oncology Practice Initiative (QOPI). Develop policies and procedures encompassing patient care and safety that complies with accepted national standards and regulatory agencies or accrediting bodies that govern the quality of healthcare delivery. Develop a quality care scorecard for the section of breast oncology, with a specific focus on quality care pathways, reduction in disparities, and adherence to evidence-based treatment guidelines. Provide physician leadership, professionalism and mentorship to others within the section, in order to achieve both patient and employee satisfaction.
  • Establish a continuing medical education program for breast disease. The program shall include educational conferences, morbidity and mortality conferences and integrate/coordinate with the Department of Surgery and Womens and Children’s Service line. Serve as the Director of the LH SSO Breast Fellowship and integrate with other LH ACGME Fellowships the system to advance education and training of future multidisciplinary care providers. Serve as the principal investigator on select cancer clinical trials within the area of breast research, additionally reaching out to colleagues and peers in order to maximize participation in a growing portfolio of breast clinical trials.

 

 

Market Growth and Expansion:

 

 

  • Monitor referring physician patterns and overall satisfaction by actively seeking written and verbal feedback on a regular basis. Present trends to the Cancer Committee and other medical staff committees. Monitor physician referral patterns and discuss trends, developing action plans that effectively address the issues, with a rapid and efficient improvement process and plan.  Identify and develop new and enhanced and diverse services/programs  in order to meet the needs of all patients Lead the development and planning for breast surgery that will support regional market growth and a reduction in the total cost of cancer care.

 

Community Outreach and Workforce Engagement:

 

 

  • Lead initiatives to reduce the incidence, mortality, and morbidity from breast cancer through prevention, early detection, treatment, and effective survivorship care of our community and region, as identified by state, regional and local stakeholders.
  • Lead specific initiatives that improve access to prevention, screening, diagnosis and treatment for breast cancer that is uniformly accessible in diverse populations across our system.
  • Actively participate in the employee and physician engagement programs, in addition to other well-being and community health initiatives.
  • Assist with the recruitment and retention of faculty members within the section, with a particular focus on workforce engagement and long-term retention plans for all faculty and team
