The Opportunity

Baystate Health, a leading not-for-profit integrated health system in New England, is seeking a Chief, Hematology/Oncology and Medical Director, Cancer Center. This is an exceptional opportunity for a dynamic, clinically excellent medical oncologist with strong leadership skills, business acumen, and productive experience in a multi-disciplinary, patient-centric environment.

The Organization

Baystate Health is one of New England’s largest integrated healthcare systems, serving a population of nearly one million in Western Massachusetts.  With more than 13,000 employees, a 1,500-member medical staff, and net patient service revenue of nearly $3 billion, this dynamic and growing system includes a flagship tertiary teaching hospital and three community hospitals; an employed medical group; a home care agency; and a health plan.  Baystate Health is an academic affiliate of and serves as the Western Massachusetts campus of the UMass Chan School of Medicine.

Baystate Health’s flagship facility for cancer care services is the D’Amour Center for Cancer Care, a free-standing facility located ½ mile from Baystate Medical Center.  Full-scope diagnostic and treatment services at D’Amour include physician clinics, oral and infused chemotherapy treatment, targeted treatments, immunotherapy, and radiation therapy treatment. Clinical and infusion services are also provided at Baystate Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield, MA.

The Division of Hematology/Oncology at Baystate includes current budgeted staffing of 13 Board Certified, fellowship trained physicians and 10 Advanced Practitioners.  The Division’s average historical clinic volume is more than 29,000 clinic visits annually representing more than 62,00 RVU’s. The Hematology-Oncology Fellowship at UMass Chan Medical School - Baystate is a three-year integrated program that meets all requirements for dual certification in both Hematology and Oncology. Division members have opportunity to participate in a broad range of clinical trials including studies of the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group, NRG Oncology, industry sponsored trials and investigator-initiated studies.

The Position

The Chief, Hematology/Oncology and Medical Director, Cancer Center will have leadership responsibility and accountability for the Division of Hematology/Oncology for all clinical, academic, and clinical research activity.  Additionally, he or she will oversee the clinical operations of the D’Amour Center and at Baystate Franklin. The Chief will work closely with the Cancer Program Administrative Director and DCCC Practice Manager and other management team members on planning, operational, and administrative matters, and the Manager, Clinical Research on research matters.  It is expected that the leader will develop and maintain a clinical practice at an approximately 50% level and be an active participant and leader in medical education activities.

The Region

Western Massachusetts is home to several premier colleges and universities, including Amherst, Hampshire, Mount Holyoke, Smith, and the University of Massachusetts. These institutions impart a vibrant college town feel to the region, where theatre, superior dining, and fine arts abound.

In Springfield and its surrounding communities, attractive housing for every taste and lifestyle is available at a cost significantly less than in the eastern part of Massachusetts.  The Greater Springfield area enjoys a superb network of highways, providing access in all directions.

Attractive communities, accessible recreation, affordability, ideal geography, and a lack of urban congestion combine to offer the employees and physicians of Baystate Health an outstanding environment in which to live and work.
