Position Overview:
The Knight Cancer Institute at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU), the only NCI-Designated Comprehensive Cancer Center located in Oregon, seeks a nationally recognized investigator in population-based cancer research to serve as the Associate Director (AD) of Population Sciences.
The AD of Population Sciences serves to develop and shape population science relevant to the mission of the Knight Cancer Institute. The AD is part of the Knight senior leadership team of esteemed scientists and oversees the strategic vision of the Knight’s population science research programs. This comprehensive vision for population-based research in cancer builds on the Knight’s existing strengths and advances the overall mission of the Knight. Exciting research areas rich for collaboration include cancer and aging, cancer and the microbiome, cancer symptom science and implementation science. Research with underserved populations, particularly Hispanic/Latino or American Indian/Alaska Native, is also a focused development area.
The AD will promote securing multi-investigator grants and identify and develop resources to advance cancer prevention and control research. To achieve this vision, the AD will partner closely with the co-leaders of the Cancer Prevention and Control (CPC) Program and the AD for Community, Outreach, and Engagement (COE).
Established scientists or physician-scientists engaged in cancer prevention and control research, including epidemiology, behavioral science, survivorship, health outcomes research, health disparities, and implementation science, are encouraged to apply.
Position Qualifications
Faculty candidates (PhD, DrPH, MD/DO, or equivalent) must:
- Possess academic credentials for faculty appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor with appropriate post-doctoral training or experience in an area of cancer population sciences. Physician candidates who wish to practice must be board-certified and eligible to practice in Oregon.
- Must have an established track record of scientific accomplishments with extramural peer-reviewed funding or senior experience in governmental or other agencies focused on cancer population sciences.
- Must have demonstrated administrative and leadership experience, such as leading a research program, division, or department.
- Must be eligible to work in the United States.
Ideal candidates will possess exceptional leadership skills, the ability to secure national cancer research grants, and a track record of developing successful multidisciplinary teams. A strong appreciation for team science and experience fostering research across basic, clinical, and population research programs is highly desirable.
Division Overview
The Knight includes the Division of Oncological Science (DOS), which provides an academic home for cross-disciplinary cancer researchers that leverages team science and collaboration (https://www.ohsu.edu/oncological-sciences). DOS consists of four sections representing research areas and scientific disciplines that support innovation and translation of discovery to impact cancer patients and the broader population we serve. The Cancer Population Science (CPS) section of DOS is committed to addressing the most challenging cancer prevention and control problems in populations with or at risk of cancer and across the translational continuum. CPS includes researchers interested in studying genetics, behaviors, and exposures at a population level that increase the risk of developing cancer and conducting cancer prevention and control intervention studies with individuals, communities, healthcare systems, and populations. CPS researchers collaborate with basic, clinical, and population health researchers. Co-location with other sections in DOS fosters dynamic collaborations. At the same time, shared resources across the Knight and OHSU provide abundant access to state-of-the-art tools, approaches, and cohorts for innovative science.
