The Dan L Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center (DLDCCC) and its new Director, Dr. Pavan Reddy, and the Department of Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) in Houston, Texas, are recruiting for clinician investigators in hematology and medical oncology to join the Section of Hematology/Oncology at the Assistant/Associate/Full Professor level.  Particular areas of focus are Breast, Melanoma/Sarcoma, Thoracic Medical Oncology, Benign Hematology and Experimental Therapeutics.  BCM and the DLDCCC NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center are affiliated with five major teaching hospitals in the Texas Medical Center including Baylor St Luke’s Medical Center, The Ben Taub Hospital and the Michael E DeBakey VA Medical Center.  Ample laboratory space is available in the Cancer Center.  The 300 members of the DLDCCC generate more than $140M in direct costs annually in cancer related research funding including more than $40M in direct costs from the NCI. Two long-term SPORE grants in breast cancer and lymphoma, a Leukemia Lymphoma SCOR Grant are among 85 multi-investigator awards, half from NCI.  Health disparities is a particular focus of research and clinical care in the cancer center.   Cancer researchers in Texas may apply for research funding to the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (a state agency charged with supporting innovation in cancer research in Texas with funding of 3 billion dollars over the next 10 years).  Generous recruitment awards are also available on a competitive basis from CPRIT.  DLDCCC is composed of 7 outstanding research programs including Nuclear Receptor, Transcription and Chromatin Biology, Pediatric Oncology, Cancer Prevention and Population Science, Cell Signaling and Metabolism, Mechanisms of Cancer Evolution, Breast Cancer, and Cancer Cell and Gene Therapy. Cancer specific Disease Working Groups in 7 different cancer sites bring basic scientists and clinical researchers together for collaborative translational research.   New initiatives in development include expanded experimental therapeutics with early phase clinical trials, precision cancer medicine and proteogenomics. Eleven Shared Resources are available to Cancer Center members, and the Human Genome Sequencing Center, the Center for Drug Discovery, and the Therapeutic Innovation Center focusing on drug development are additional unique resources.  The Center is the recipient of a $100M naming gift from the Duncan family.  A new ambulatory care building primarily for cancer (to open in May 2023) and new inpatient hospital are under construction.  Interested candidates will have an MD or MD/PhD degree and should be board eligible or board certified in hematology and/or oncology. The Department of Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine and the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Medical Center in Houston, Texas in collaboration with the Dan L. Duncan Cancer Center seek a Board Certified/Board Eligible Medical Oncologist/ Physician-investigator interested in clinical, translational, or basic research together with patient care and teaching responsibilities. Areas of particular interest include Phase 1-2 clinical trials, gastrointestinal cancer, lung and/or head and neck cancer, genitourinary oncology, and hematologic malignancy. The section of hematology/oncology now includes 17 full-time faculty, 18 voluntary faculty, and it supports active clinical services and training programs of Ben Taub General Hospital, St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital, as well as the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Medical Center. More than 5000 new cancer patients are seen each year in hospitals served by the College. The Cancer Center includes 278 members with more than $100M in cancer-related grant support and it includes strong programs in breast cancer, prostate cancer, cell and gene therapy, pediatric oncology, nuclear receptors, cancer prevention and population sciences, molecular carcinogenesis and tumor biology. There are developing programs in several other areas. Close interactions among faculty in the Cancer Center and those at MD Anderson, Rice and other Texas Medical Center institutions are encouraged. A naming gift of $100M was recently given to the Cancer Center for recruitment and program development among other initiatives.
