As a hematologist, you would provide care for patients with benign and malignant hematologic conditions, perform autologous and allogeneic transplant and administer CART cell therapy, following the patient from diagnosis through treatment, including transplant and post-transplant care.
Avera Transplant Program received its first FACT accreditation in 2003 and is South Dakota’s only transplant and cellular therapy center, providing a large transplant referral base. Avera has performed over 800 transplants and cellular therapies and is actively seeking to expand the transplant and cellular therapy program. Avera’s team is supported by dedicated APPs, transplant coordinators, pharmacists, social workers, state-of-the art infusion center, inpatient hospitalist support and a comprehensive network of sub-specialties who are well integrated into the transplant and cellular therapy program.
Avera supports physician’s interest in clinical research as Avera actively participates in industry and non-industry sponsored clinical trials in malignant hematology and cellular therapy. Academic appointments and teaching opportunities are also available through the University of South Dakota School of Medicine.

The cancer program offers state-of-the-art services in one convenient location and is home to 2 hematologists trained in blood and marrow transplant/cellular therapy, 7 medical oncologists, 2 gynecologic oncologists, and 3 radiation oncologists and sub specialized surgical colleagues in all specialties for cancer care. The Hematology program has weekly multidisciplinary Transplant & Cellular Therapy and Research conferences.
