MultiCare Health System is seeking a Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of the MultiCare Cancer Institute to be charged with building and maintaining a cohesive cancer service line that demonstrates a strong commitment to the highest standards of clinical care and cancer research.  The CMO will provide vision, direction, and leadership for all professional and hospital-based inpatient and outpatient services across the Cancer Institute and cancer care continuum. S/he will have overall clinical oversight as well as financial, strategic, and operational responsibility for the Institute working in a dyad leadership model with the President of the Cancer Institute.

The CMO oversees the quality and performance of oncologic clinical research across the Cancer Institute and will foster and enable continued expansion of the Cancer Institute’s research activities, clinical trials, and patient accruals. S/he will ensure effective integration of clinical research across the clinical activities and disease-oriented programs of the Cancer Institute. 

The CMO will be responsible for the ongoing development, planning, coordination and expansion of Cancer Institute clinical and research programs and activities across the full continuum of care, its facilities and physician and advanced practice providers. S/he will lead the expansion and integration of clinical offerings and ensure the highest levels of clinical care and quality are consistently provided across the Cancer Institute. The CMO will lead and collaborate across the Cancer Institute, as well as with other system leadership, to ensure that clinical activities of the Cancer Institute are efficient, accountable, team-based, multidisciplinary, and support the patient-centered mission of the Cancer Institute.

The CMO will directly oversee all physicians and medical personnel across the Cancer Institute, including sub-specialty Medical Directors, Clinical Directors (lab, pharmacy, imaging, and pathology), disease-oriented program Chairs and Co-Chairs, and Advanced Practice Providers. S/he will have indirect oversight of Cancer Institute nursing staff and other non-medical administrative, professional and support staff. S/he will have responsibility for recruiting outstanding physicians in alignment with clinical and research needs, expansion into new market areas, projected growth in patient volumes, and in support of organizational strategy and objectives.

The CMO will work collaboratively with leadership across the Cancer Institute and MultiCare Health System to develop and execute organizational strategies and objectives. S/he will be a key leader within MultiCare Health System in addition to being a visible leader within the communities served by the Cancer Institute and plays a key role in the Cancer Institute’s community engagement and philanthropic efforts.   The role is an outstanding opportunity to lead a growing, newly established Cancer Institute within a large, expanding and regionally leading health system.

Requirements

  • Recognized clinical leader in his/her area of oncology specialty, with a minimum of 10 years clinical experience post-fellowship including leadership experience in a high-quality cancer environment; preferred Medical Director of Oncology Service Line or Director of Cancer Center/Institute leadership role.
  • Demonstrated ability to recruit outstanding physicians, mentor colleagues, and foster research.
  • Has successful experience in effective clinical operations and administrative leadership and participating in the development and execution of strategic plans.
  • Board certified and fellowship trained in hematology, hematology/oncology, radiation oncology or board certified in surgery with an oncology specialty focus, and eligible for unrestricted medical licensure in the State of Washington.
  • Possesses an outstanding record of clinical activities and leadership, research support, scholarly accomplishments, and mentoring.
  • Exhibits dynamic leadership skills with excellent communication and interpersonal skills and keen strategic vision.
  • Possesses the drive and capability to expand and maintain an outstanding Cancer Institute team and to, collaboratively and strategically, develop and implement plans that fully realize the strategic vision of the Cancer Institute.
  • Possesses a broad understanding of trends and developments in oncology, including new and innovative treatments such as precision medicine, CAR-t, and immunotherapy, with the ability to develop and integrate a sophisticated and multidisciplinary cancer care program across a complex health system.
  • Possesses a passion for fostering and performing outstanding clinical oncology care; for building/enabling oncology research; and, for the education, mentorship, and development of physicians and advance practice providers.
  • Possesses enthusiasm and commitment to enhancing the scope and scale of clinical care and research available to the people of the Pacific Northwest, in alignment with the vision of MultiCare Health System.
  • Commitment to, and passion for, building multidisciplinary programs, delivering the highest-quality clinical care and research, and understanding of the key determinants of success in building outstanding clinical care and clinical research.

  • A strategic and operational leader who can build consensus and create/facilitate teams that successfully achieve operational, clinical, and research goals; experience in clinical operations leadership and an understanding of Cancer Institute finances.
  • A leader who fosters a culture of accountability and problem-solving, who displays and teaches resiliency and adaptability.
  • A strong record of clinical research; an interest in fostering outstanding clinical research and increasing the research output of the Cancer Institute.
  • Someone who can approach issues granularly and effectively uses metrics and data to make decisions, determine plans of action, and evaluate outcomes.
  • Experience with industry sponsored or cooperative group clinical trials and strong relationships with industry.
  • A person of high integrity, politically savvy, with the ability to excel in a dynamic, growing organization.
