Summary: The Breast Medical Oncologist is responsible for leading the breast oncology strategy and expanding the breast oncology program at NWMS, while providing comprehensive care to patients. This includes conducting examinations, ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests, and developing treatment plans. The oncologist will collaborate with other healthcare professionals to ensure the best possible outcomes for patients. Their role will involve active participation in program development, community outreach, and educating peers to further enhance NWMS’s leadership in breast oncology.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:
- Diagnose and treat a wide range of breast cancer subtypes using the latest clinical guidelines and treatment protocols
- Conduct thorough patient assessments and history-taking.
- Order and interpret breast cancer-specific diagnostic procedures, such as stereotactic and ultrasound-guided biopsies, mammograms, and breast MRIs, to ensure accurate diagnoses.
- Manage complex oncology cases (not limited to breast oncology), coordinate surgery, radiation, and medical oncology treatments to ensure comprehensive patient care.
- Manage hematologic disorders such as anemia, clotting disorders, etc., ensuring patients receive appropriate treatment.
- Communicate diagnosis and prognosis to patients and their families in a compassionate manner.
- Educate patients and families on disease progression, treatment options, and clinical trial opportunities, helping them to make informed decisions regarding their care.
- Develop individualized treatment plans, which may include oral medication, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, immunotherapy, or surgical options.
- Discuss treatment, potential side effects, and expected outcomes with patients.
- Monitor patients throughout their treatment, adjusting plans as necessary based on their responses and side effects.
- Reassess as treatment progresses. Pursuing alternative therapies, palliative care and/or hospice when necessary.
- Interpret clinical, genomic, and efficacy data.
- Provide supportive care and manage symptoms related to the diagnosis and its treatment.
- Work closely with a multidisciplinary team, including radiologists, pathologists, surgeons, and palliative care specialists.
- Initiate patient enrollment and management in clinical trials, ensuring access to cutting-edge breast cancer therapies and adherence to study protocols.
- Engage in clinical research and stay up to date with the latest breast cancer treatment protocols and technologies.
- Participate in clinical trials and contribute to ongoing research projects.
- Utilize approved NWMS standards of care, procedures, safety precautions, and study protocols.
- Educate patients and their families about cancer including treatment options and lifestyle modifications.
- Maintain accurate and comprehensive medical records, including treatment plans and patient progress notes.
- Ensure billing is completed in a timely manner.
- Ensure compliance with healthcare regulations and standards.
- Advocate for patients’ needs and preferences throughout the treatment process.
- Facilitate communication between patients and other healthcare providers.
- Participate in tumor board discussions, collaborating with other providers to evaluate complex cases and optimize treatment strategies.
- Work with leadership to expand the breast program at NWMS.
- Performs other duties as assigned by management.
